I'm interested in improving the shifting of my 2000 S3 (30,000 miles) - my problem is with false neutrals at WOT. I presently have the Banke shifter, have upgraded the shoe and have rebuilt the transmission once. I've also tried numerous gear oils (redline, mobil1, gear oils, ...) I'd like to get your input on the following:
1. Back cut gears
2. Baker Smooth Shift Drum Kit
3. Automatic Chain Tensioner
4. Billet trap door
5. Any other advice?

Or should I schedule bi-annual transmission rebuilds? Thanks in advance.

BTW - DO NOT USE GL-5 Gear Oil -- it will corrode the copper wiring on your stator.

Have you tried to adjust your detent plate?
Do you use the latest version?33656-90A?

About the automatic chain tensioner
Qoute from:

http://www.mklsportster.com/xlwinter99.htm

"Hayden M6 Primary Chain Tensioner - I added this device to supplement the Balance Masters, as per the recommendation of the aforementioned "101" book. Aside from the slightly quieter shifting, I detected virtually no difference from before. For all the hype about smoother shifting, reduced vibes, better feel during decceleration, etc., I was disappointed. This product is absolutely not worth any money or effort to install, based on my impressions thus far. YMMV - some listers rave about their M6s!"

Search the knowledge vault, Aaron had a great writeup on why NOT to use the automatic chain tensioner. It will build up a bur on one side, and cease to be spring loaded, and cease to be a tensioner.

Sounds like you have done all the straightforward stuff. If you really want an improvement, I think you are up to the point where you have two options:

1) Baker 6 speed.
2) 2006 or newer XB motor / tranny.
3) 2006 or newer XB.

All pretty expensive, but both pretty doable, and both of which would probably give you the "day and night" difference you are after. Both Baker and Buell had entire engineering teams with some of the sharpest people on the planet putting person years of work into solving the exact issue you are trying to address.

A $4000 tranny (or whatever the Baker 6 speed costs) or a salvage 2006 XB motor / tranny is going to cost a lot, but will still be some tiny fraction (1/10000?) of what Baker and Buell spent to solve this problem.

If it were me, I would just go get a Ulysses and be done with it, though I really love the focused and edgy nature of my XB9SX. I have fond emotional memories of my M2 I traded in, and it;s character, but in terms of a motorcycle and how it works, the XB does *everything* better for me, not just the transmission.

I do have the new detent plate already.
To my understanding, there is no conversion (yet?) for the XB to XL transmissions, but has anyone done a full engine swap -- now there's a good thought.

Since Buell closed my local shop (Modesto, CA), I don't think I'll be purchasing another one. My next closest dealer is 2 hours away. In any case, I really like the Tuber design.

Thanks - looking forward to more great input!

What about the Baker Easy Shift thingie?
No experience with it, just asking, it's only about $260 or so, American Sport Bike sells them, so they must be OK, right?

LOL! Post in the classifieds section:

"Wanted to trade even up, my XB12X for your M2".

(then brace for impact ;) )

(I do and did love my M2 though, don't get me wrong. Best bike ever made. And the 9sx is even better. And the XB12X is probably even better then that.)

the 101 book also lists a long, tedious procedure regarding surface grinding the shims in the gearbox -- I know of no one that's done it, but have been curious if it works as well as claimed in the book --

M6 tensioner is, as written above, bad gris gris -- avoid it

I prefer the trap door transmission of the tubers. Going into the transmission isn't an ordeal like it is on the XBs.

No way I'd put an XB bottom end in my tuber.

Bad gris-gris, indeed.

Two of my tubers, both purchased used, came with 'em installed.

Both broke.
