Has anyone else ever had the rear master cylinder seize? Seems the metal of the push rod reacts with the piston in water and causes severe corrosion. Symptoms for mine was the piston was not returning completely to the bottom of the bore thus alot of free play in the pedal. It got worse and worse till the rear brake pads couldn't return in the caliper and were constantly dragging. Pulled it apart tonight and cleaned it, knocked the piston from the bore (it needed a fair bit of persuasion with a hammer and screwdriver) and re-polished the bore with kitchen paper soaked in brake fluid. Cleaned the other parts as best as possible and re-assembled. Then I coated the push rod with anti-seize in an effort to stop the rusting next time it gets wet. I've also clamped the rubber boot with a zip tie to try to keep excess water out but I don't think this will achieve all that much. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this over the years and how they solved it. Seems to get worse if your not riding the bike for a while after it has been used in the rain. |
