ok people, here goes! just bought a 2000 blast and wanted to know what you all recommended for oil, i live in maine, so i'll be riding in 30 degree weather soon, and then up in the 90's in the summer. can't wait to hear your responses... dave oh, by the way...the manual calls for "diesel engine oil"?????whats up with that? |

Redline 20w-50 or another synthetic oil. If you were planning on changing the oil between the 2 seasons I'd go to a 10w-40 in the Winter months (or whatever the manual recommends) to 20w-50 in the Summer. |

synthetic! Just makesure that when you start it when its cold that you warm the engine really well before revving the heck out of it. The oil needs to be able to flow. |

I've got a buddy who runs diesel oil in all his vehicles. It has a very high amount of detergents - I don't know if it does him any good, but it doesn't seem to hurt. He had a DOHC engine with Hydraulic lash adjusters for the cams, and the diesel oil kept them quieter than regular oil. Maybe the detergents are good for our hydraulic lifters in the same way?? For winter riding I highly recommend Shell Rotella Synthetic 5W40. I cost only $13 per gallon at Walmart and gives you outstanding cold weather protection at startup. Since it is a diesel oil, it has a great package of buffers and detergents (which is a good thing) It is fast becoming the oil of choice among many motorcyclists. It is even acceptable in a wet clutch application (not a concern for our Buells since we have a separate reservoir for our clutch/tranny oil.). For summer oil I use supertech (walmart brand)20W50 and keep it changed religiously. Heres a long but good read on oil. http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Oils1.html |

I'm just down the road (so to speak) in Lincolnville. I run the recomended Harly oil and have had no problems at all. I did change the gear oil to synth and have been very happy with it. I have a daughter who lives in Lamoine so I get down that way fairly often. There is some great riding out there. Welcome.

Dave, Mobil 1 75W90 is great in the transmission and is widely available. If I understand correctly the greatest benefit of synthetic oil is that it holds up better to the shearing action of the trans gears. I know we must have some lubrication engineers on this board... I run dino oil in the engine and keep it clean. Remember one of the most important things you can do for your Buell (aside from changing the oil) is give her a good and looooooong warmup. Bar Harbor is a nice little town. My wife and I stopped there to pick up the Cat on our trip to Nova Scotia last year. |

On the subject of good long warm ups: I come from the school that the warm up is done as you ride. Just take it easy on them when cold. If you let the bike idle long enough the auto enrichener (choke) will come off and you'll have a cold engine with no choke. Letting a v twin or thumper idle excessively is a bad idea. Also, some engines (including some Harley's) have a slow idle oil circuit which means the same oil gets circulated over and over again at idle. This helps with warm up, but if done excessively it can overheat and breakdown the oil. |

As JLB wrote diesel engines run a very high compression ratio (like 22:1) so are very hard on the bottom end (like v twins and thumpers) and need a good oil to buffer the bottom end. Thats why HD spec oils are usually on the heavy side. Dont even think of running non synthetic 5w-40 unless its very cold! |

Yeah, the warmup is just not loading the engine or revving the crap out of it like the Big Kid did with his Blast. |

Welcome, Mano! Another Blasted Mainer! Yeeeeha! I recommend Amsoil products. They rock! I run Amsoil in my Chevy, Harley, Blast, and Toro mower. The stuff is worth it's weight in gold. Jim |

Hi, Is it OK to run Mobil 1 V-Twin 20-50 in the motor and tranny? Or should only a gear oil be used in the tranny? |

Since H-D/Buell recommend using their OEM Syn-3 synthetic engine oil in the tranny/primary, it would seem likely that using the Mobil-1 20W50 there would be okay too. There is a debate ongoing in the main Knowledge Vault concerning the acceptability of using gear lubricant in the buell tranny. |

Dont use gear oil is too general a statement. Some motor oil is also no good. Before using either BE SURE its okay. |

I don't know why more people just don't use this stuff: http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448 768339&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302290355&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=25343743022 90355&bmUID=1144175322027&bmLocale=en_US It only costs six bucks, and is recommended for a 10,000 miles service interval. Sounds like a winner to me. James |

Ask the gear lube manufacturer. If they dont have a listing or crossover-dont use it. Because of the many types of gear/transmission/engine oils I definitely wouldnt use anything in the primary unless I checked the compatibility (manufacturer of motorcycle or oil producer). The clutch may work normally for a while then the problems will begin. |

The clutch wouldn't be a problem as the oil doesn't lubricate the clutch as much as cool it. What does everybody use for primary oil if gear oil is no good? I'm thinking Mobil 1 the 15w40 or so? |

I still use Redline 75w90 synthetic gear oil (have for 10+years). I think the HD synthetic engine/primary oil is a good bet. |
