I've now got 1500 miles on my XB12Ss and the mechanical noise just keeps getting worse. I've gone on one ride of about an hour and another of about 10 minutes lately without the outer airbox cover and its getting scary. The bike is stock (the cover had wet paint on it so it stayed at home). I thought maybe the lack of the outer cover was letting more noise out to my ears but I put the cover back on a few minutes ago and its still loud. I guess if its a rod knocking I'll know soon enough. |

You best bring that thing back!! All H/D v45s have a certain amount of mechanical noise, but if you suspect a bad con rod, get it looked at. My $0.02. Dan |

I had a 2002 Sportster I thought was a little too loud. I just didn't know enough about HD engines to know if it was bad or not. With about 500 miles on it I drove it to my dealer and had a mechanic listen to it. I got a new motor. Turns out a cam bearing spun, obstructing oil flow to the top end. These things do make a lot of racket but it probably wouldn't hurt to have the dealer look at it. |

Thanks for the advice guys. I wonder how the dealer 5 miles from my house will treat me considering I bought the thing from a different dealer? |

Just tell the new dealer you feel he has a better shop than the other. |

Just had a buddy of mine who has ridden Harley's for years and rebuilt a couple along the way take a listen to it. He said he'd take it to the shop. Actually, he said he'd NEVER heard a noise like that out of a Harley engine. Time to call the dealer. |
