Cygnus, Check the "oil pump drive gear" threads in the KV. The original gears have been known to wear excessively and eventually disintegrate on some tube framed Buells. Nobody's reported the problem yet on an XB as far as I know. Based on discussions here, it seems likely that the root cause of the problem is gear misalignment in some engines due to "tolerance stacking". It may be that the XB's are machined to closer tolerances so that this isn't a problem with them. At any rate, the new gear is made of more durable material than the pre-06 gear and will evidently stand up to the stress whether there is a slight misalignment of the gears or not. |

It's a relatively easy thing to check when you're changing your oil if you ever get curious. Disconnect the forward oil line from the oil pump, remove two allen screws, and lower the oil pump from the engine case. Shine a light up inside the hole, and look at the oil pump drive gear on your crankshaft. The most important thing is to rotate the engine a few degrees and re-check the gear several times so that you see all 360 degrees of the gear. Since it's kind of awkward to get under the bike to get a good look, use of a digital camera to take photos that you can download and study at your computer is highly recommended. One thing of great interest to me on this- the XBRR has a completely different oil pump configuration; it appears to be integrated into the cam gear cover on this engine. Perhaps even the new tougher gear didn't hold up to extended ~8500 RPM operation, or they needed additional oil flow, or a combination of the two. I'll be very interested to see if the new configuration makes it's way into future Buell engines. |

Ask Dago about his stock gear wearing out on his '04 XB12S/R. I bought the new one but haven't installed it yet. |

i know the 2006 model year xb's are supposed to have the updated oil pump drive gear. i have a 2005 firebolt w/8k miles that has a production date of jan 05 and was wondering if anyone know's the approx(or exact)prod. date or engine serial# when they were first installed? the reason i ask this is because my 00 X1 millenium was produced in apr 00 and came stock with the beefed up primary chain tensioner that wasnt supposed to be used until june of 2000. i just checked the oil drive gear on my X1 today and at 19k miles it shows little to no signs of any abnormal wear and all the teeth are present. this is my 1st post so forgive me if it is in the wrong spot, i couldnt find any current postings on this. i just registered last week after reading these boards for quite some time. |
