While it is not a back rest, it does give the passenger a little more assurance. I always felt like I was going off the back of my husband's M2. We took the M2 to LaVale with the rack and 45 liter bag. I rode all day with him and never had the feeling of falling off. Just an opinion from someone that has had the same feelings as your wife!
