Lee, great review...Have you considered quittin' the day job, and putting this god given natural talent to work for you? I see big money in Hollywood for a man with such in-depth movie review abilities.... |

Anthony Hopkins is brilliant. The bike is awesome. I had never heard of Burt Munro before. I also never cared about land speed records. Coming out of that movie made me want to spend some time researching the subject and the man. I also have the almost uncontrollable urge to smelt something. |

Looks like I'll be waiting for video. Only place it is being played here is Tampa Theatre. Too far to go for a movie and with the high crime rate in downtown Tampa area, I would be afraid my Uly would be gone by the time I came out. Does anyone know if there are plans for a wider release? |

My wife and I saw it last night and really enjoyed the movie; that Burt Munro was a real character. I would recommend watching it. Always liked a story based on a real person, especially an underdog. Anthony Hopkins does an excellent job. |

...and none of you who've seen the movie can tell me that you didn't come out of the theater thinking about what you might do to any one of your bikes to give it maybe one try down the salt flats. Anthony Hopkins did a great job as usual. He became Bert Munro. His New Zealand accent wasn't quite right--Hopkins being a Welshman and all--but that is a minor issue. This has become one of my favorite movies of all time. |

Good movie, but... SPOILER ALERT: If you've never heard of Burt Munro and read up on him on the 'net such as at the link already provided, it'll mess up the movie for you - because the movie has a number of factual flaws that will be obvious if you study him beforehand. Basically the movie is faithful to the "flavor" of this guy, but the details...fr'instance: 1) Yeah, Burt broke 200mph all right, but NOT on his first trip to Bonneville! His first record in 1962 involved 138mph. He broke 200 in '67. 2) He first saw Bonneville in '57. 3) It's possible his initial tires were junk cracked hand-shaved street tires in '62. And it's quite possible they let him past tech inspection purely out of pity that first trip. But by '67 he was a multi-year veteran and it's a good bet he'd been forced to up his safety standards by a significant margin. 4) By '67 he had a decent American "pit crew" network developed out of fans and remaining dealers/aftermarket supporters of the Indian marque. The movie has him working totally solo on crap tires and breaking 200mph...nope, NOT what happened. The film also downplays the extent of his racing experience within New Zealand. He was already a legend there; the film has a bunch of punk-arse Brando wanna-bes challenging him to a beach race when in reality they'd know full well his machine was "for real". I found these details annoying after the fact, but looking into his life after seeing the film, it's obvious that the movie DID capture the guy's essense...the homebrew, "build it all yourself" attitude right down to casting his own pistons and other major internal parts. This guy ground a set of con-rods from an old truck driveshaft for God's sake...and raced with them for literally years. The filmmaker had done a documentary on the guy years earlier titled "Offerings To The God Of Speed" and that title appears briefly in this movie as writing on a shelf of broken engine internals. I'm not sure yet but it appears that the documentary was done when Burt was still alive, if so I would LOVE to see it. This later film plays with the facts, bigtime, in order to compress a lot of elements of this guy's life into one brief time period. It works as a movie but...I think it could have been done better and more factually. (Message edited by Jimincalif on February 06, 2006) |

Jimincalif - the movie was a compilation of highpoints from all of his trips to Boneville. Sure facts were stretched and things embellished, but none of this detracted from the quality of the movie. This was certainly not a biography. ...Bert Munroe also made his cast iron cylinder liners from old gas pipes that the municipality had dug up to be replaced. Then he machined his own aluminum finned cylinders and pressed those liners in. |

I think if you want facts, stay on your overstuffed couch and watch the Discovery Channel. Otherwise just enjoy the movie. Never having heard of the man, I never took any of the storyline for granted. I came out of the movie wanting to know the whole story. If you are familiar with the Burt Munro story already and can't accept creative license for the sake of entertainment, I suggest avoiding the movie.

If you want the accurate story, the same director did it as a documentary about 20 years ago. Look on line and maybe you can order it. Sorry for you guys that won't have it nearby. I'm a theater manager in a small Montana town, but we are getting it in a few weeks as part of our Spring Film Festival. |

I emailed Magnolia Pictures Booking (the co releasing the movie) after I didn't see a release date for it here in Birmingham. I thought I was gonna have to trek to Atlanta or Nashville. I got a very quick response back the next day saying it was indeed being released here in B'ham the end of Feb. Cool! Email 'em here booking@magpictures.com My local Triumph, Ducati, BMW dealership newsletter provided the email address. Uncanny what ya can do when you're interested in motorcycles. What Henrik said. I thoroughly enjoyed it, even though I recognized that there was a fair amount of "artistic license" applied in order to make it fit the time allowed. If you're looking for a motorhead movie with lots of technical detail, this ain't it. But it's a bike movie your S.O. will enjoy. Hopkins is great in the role. rt |

Sweet- I wrote them and found out this: "The film will open in Charleston (South Carolina), Columbia, and Greenville on 2/24, and Myrtle Beach on 3/3." Seems like the movie's getting a lot of good press. I saw one ad for it during the Superbowl, and caught another ad for it on Fox at lunch on Wednesday. Hopefully it will do well. |

Having been to Bonneville myself, there were two - or actually 3 points that hit home: 1) when Munro gets to the Salt the very first time. The feeling of standing there surrounded by all that racing history, every mountain surrounding the Salt named after a racer - is just fantastic. 2) first time seeing sunrise on the Salt Flats. The transition from dark, blueish gray dawn to the first hints of deep red on the horizon - clearly outlining it. Seeing the colors shift on the mountains and on the horizon. And in the outline realizing that - dang, the Earth is round. 3) First time getting on a bike for a run down the Salt. Awesome feeling. Hopkins really gets it right, and portrays it very well.
