Hi guys
I've been cutting my muffler lately...
not finished yet but I've some interesting pics and tutorials (in italian...I'm sorry!!!)

I'll translate for you if you wish, and when I get time I'll modify my pics with english tutorials.

basically it's a mod (two mods actually) that start cutting the muffler in 3 pieces (yes, 3!)

you save just one internal tube and then use weld machine to broke the wall#1 (in the A chamber) and to tap the 2 holes in the wall#2 (in the B chamber).
This way you create an A+B chamber and you gut it with phonoadsorbent material after placing a drilled tube (holed pipe..I don't know how to call it) that goes from the former A chamber to the C chamber (that one with the outlet).
The C chamber is basically an empty chamber, it acts as "pre-outing" chamber, helping decreasing the final sound.

This is mod #1

the mod #2 is almost the same...
but instead of breaking the wall #1 you tap the two holes in it (same as what you do in wall#2)
this way you seal the A chamber (not in contact with gasses) and the only gutted chamber is chamber B.
Chamber C is same as mod#1.

ok, you're pretty confused now, follow the link hoping that those pictures could speak a better english;)

here you go

for those that were asking for dyno/power etc...

I didn't finish yet...actually I quit working on it. (can't find 50mm drilled pipe!)

I'm busy at the moment...so you'll have to find out if it works!!

mod#1 should be quieter
mod#2 should be louder.
I can't say if mod1 works better than mod2 or viceversa.

I'm not a PRO drummer-maker;)

I hate to tell you that if you leave all the stock tubes and guts in place, your not even close to a Drummer...been where you are now , doesn't work...but I'm not a pro either.....

quote:

"I hate to tell you that if you leave all the stock tubes and guts in place..."

I'm not leaving the stock tubes inside nor the "guts"

actually there are NOT stock tubes left inside the muffler besides that small curve that comes from headers

and Mod#1 gut the wall#1 in half (or more) and let the gas flow to the the chamber A.

I don't want to be close to a drummer don't worry, I just want to have fun.
someday I'll also find out if my fun make my bike better.
At the moment I can't tell.

p.s.
why are you saing you're not a PRO, you build and sell muffler pretended to be the best choice for XB..
are you that modest?;)

Hey Kevin, My stock muffler has a few underside dents. Is is still a good trade in on a Drummer?

Also, can you add Uly skid plate to the muffler on a 9r?

Xxxb9s,
The reason I added to your post, is because it misinforms new, let me say, new people about what they are buying from me...that's all....do what you want and have you're fun!!!! No I'm not modest, just honest and serious about what I do...
There are alot more PRO'S out there that make less power than I do, so no I'm not a PRO yet!!! Get some dyno comparos of the before and after all the changes you are making, that would be fun to see....

Skyguy,
I can straighten the bottom if it's not flat, I have done a few of those as well.....I can add a stiffener if you want, but the can is too thin to support alot of abuse no matter what you add to it without going all the way around it....

Ummmm, Whats flat? The ends are still oval! Maybe I need to get a pic or two.

Also, power is nice but can you make it fairly quiet? I hammer the canyons and dont want to the cops to hear me commiing.

Skyguy,
sorry, what I'm saying is yes I can fix a few small dents just fine, I've even fixed a few that were flat on the bottom as well...I've done paint and bodywork for 16yrs, dents are no problem.....

I didn't claimed power gains or anything else, I also added I'm not a PRO and I can't promise better performances,
then I added that your prodouct is said to be the best choice for xb....

and then you came in saying that I was going to a dead way "because I was leaving all the stock tubes and gut in it" (thing that was totally false)...ah, yes, I also missed the part where my post misinforms people...

Many things make me think you can't read well or I can't express myself or both.

cheers

hi xxxb9s
do you need to use a race ecu with this cut exhaust.

guys, again, I didn't finish this mod, it is basically in the same state as in the pictures (cut in 3 pieces).

But I can say you need to use race ECM each time you make some intake or exhaust mods.
actually I've been using race ecm also with stock muffler (currently using race ecm with 12 exhaust with valve closed) and it runs just perfect.
Race Ecm should accomodate better when it comes to put more fuel on mixture. It also doesn't care about pollution laws and restriction so it is supposed to work better than stock.

I think my answer now is "yes"

;)

Xxxb9s,
Good to see others who aren't afraid to chop/Mod their muffler. I was interested in your post as I also modded my own muffler also. Except mine is from a 12 motor with the Interactive exhaust valve. I chose to keep most of the stock routing and design, mainly I changed the Inlet pipe size and second pipe/return pipe size going up about an 1/8th inch I.D. on each. also did some minor porting of the valve to allow faster gas transition from closed position to open position. Here is a link http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/156141.html?1130518480 to my earlier post. Only problem I had was the exhaust tips. I angle cut them rather quickly (Not shown in photos) after a fast ride through some corners that let me know they were dragging.

man you did a great job!

I didn't move that far, I see you changed things pretty much everywere down there!!

...and you also got a good performance outcome

Did you ever think of just making a large "H" shaped cut along the top instead of cutting the pipe in three pieces? Seems like you could do that and peel the can open with less challenge to the structural integrity of the muffler.

Vegas,
Yes the "H" cut would work but I wanted more access to everything. I cut at the Factory welds rear and front, that left the original can "uncut" except at the weld points where they slip the front and rear pieces into the middle. Then I put it all back at original weld seams as before. By doing it this way I was able to access the IA valve witch is ahead of the first weld seam and baffle wall.

if you make that H shaped cut then you have to work on a narrow space in order to cut the tubes inside (which are tough to cut)..you need special good quality hardware (dremel..)
And also when you have to put the cap back on it it could be bent or smaller or both (due to the material removed during the cut..

I chose this way that seems easier, at least if you are not a machinist.

Ahhh ok. I was talking to someone else about that today and they thought that maybe the metal would be too hard to reform after bending it open. Someone here (I think it was Glitch) was talking about a mod whwre they used a wire mesh in the end to restrict flow on the outbound. (for back pressure) That would also allow the sound. Anyone ever try that?

The mod that I am working on (slowly that is) is basicly eliminating what you call chamber C, the rewelding the stock end cap back on with duals like cadzilla. (Only shorter and fatter outlets)

This is the fun of owning a hotrod so to speak. Personalization!

yes the "eliminating C chamber mod" is one of the oldest I've heard about...

but I think it leaves some big holes on the midrange because it basically turns the muffler into a "straight pipe"
the muffler would be also very loud since you don't use any rock wool or similar as phonoadsorbent packing material..

at least that is what I've heard about, not sure though.
