I would like to change the paint on my 98 S1 but I am a little edgy about painting that plastic tank. Two special questions are: 1. Given the problem with bubbling decals...is it best not to clear over the new ones. 2. Is there any particular paint brands or formulations that work particularly well in this application. And lastly (sorry I know I said two, but this just came to mind) does anyone know the actual name of the Silver used for this model year so I can find its paint code. Thanks. Jander. |

Jander.... I had my S1W tank repainted and it's holding up very well. My painter used a vapor barrier primer. I'm not sure what it was exactly called. He virtually guaranteed me the tank wouldn't bubble. Good luck!!! |

I have a bunch of technical info from Buell on how to properly paint these tanks. Hit me with an email to sales-at-americansportbike-dot-com and I'll forward the info on to you. Al |

Good idea on the vapor barrier primer...didn't think of that. I guess that tank could breathe a little. I'll certainly take that advice. Thanks. |

No don't do that. Go buy the newer style tuber decals that are thicker. |

Your silver should be Billet Metallic. Paint code is: DBC 36571 This is a PPG paint code. Mark |

Would it be ok to paint over the existing paint on the tank (after preping) or should the tank be stripped? |

I'd recommend stripping, at least down to primer -- it seems that the tank DOES breath a bit, and adding layers increases the chance of bubbles -- it took two years for my paint over paint to bubble, but once it started, it went gangbusters |

What would one strip with I wonder. Aircraft stripper would eat that plastic like crazy methinks. I knew the old decals would have to come off, but that leads back to the same question. Likely I will leave all work to the painting professionals, but I would be good to give them some tips ahead of time. Al, I just realized that you put your email in the post, I PM'ed you before. I'll fire you an email in the morning. Thanks. |
