It just arrived and now I shall remove the 14" standard cut and install the Euro cut. I'll post a photo and riding impressions later today. I hope it works better than the 14". |

Wow, Electrodude must like his new shield so much that he can't get off the bike and post a dang review. |

Here's a photo of the 16" Euro-cut. The install was without modification. The top holes on both sides came elongated and unlike the 14" windshield that I took off this one I was able to install without enlarging any holes. I went out for a ride and it was better than the 14" Standard cut but I still got head buffeting, just not as bad. I rode out on the I80 which goes east and west and the head buffeting was a pain (Thank God I wear ear plugs). I then turned north on I680 and the buffeting lessoned because of the southernly wind I imagine. At lower speeds this 16" was much better than the 14". Part of the problem may be my cheap full coverage helmet. I'll try to go out today with my half helmet and get a better indication of whether the wind noise problem is more the helmet or the windshield. I'm used to riding behind the Harley Electraglide windshield which I have no complaints whatsoever but then I never have worn a full coverage helmet behind it. |

I went out today with my half helmet instead of the full coverage helmet. It was much better around town at speed under 50 mph, but it still was terrible at over 50 mph. Even with ear plugs the wind turbulence is very annoying and takes a lot of the fun out of the riding. The air is very turbulent from about my nose on up. If I leaned forward and ducked my head down only a couple of inches the buffeting is gone but the trouble is I don't ride like that and don't plan to start. I'm sure if I was only about 5'9" instead of 6'1" this windshield would be great but for me it pretty much sucks. For the $157 bucks I spent on this thing I feel I was sold a bill-o-goods. Nobody my height could go on a long trip with this wind shield causing the wind to rattle your brain like it does. Cee Bailey should of made sure that this thing worked before they sold it. Talk about feeling like a guinea pig. |

The shield has to be a minimum of 21" to get the wind over your head. I called Cee Baileys about making me one that tall. They said they would but the form they have will not allow for that height right now. I am still playing with mine but I most likely am going to cut it down 1" at a time until I get clean air at my head. I have added the stock windshield to my 16" to see if it helps with the extra height. So far it is working out pretty good although it does not look to good. Function over form may have to prevail. Was trying to duplicate a laminar Lip to some extent. Mike Long Island, NY 06 XB12X Black of course |

When did Cee Baileys say they would be able to produce the taller screen? Electraglider, I agree with the guinea pig thing, it seems that enthusiasm overtook commercial reason! PS, the reason I'm so interested is that I have a blown disc in my neck from a climbing accident and the wind around my head gives me a hard time. The standard screen is ok at legal speeds but a taller screen that keeps the air off my head would make it that much easier! (Message edited by brat on January 24, 2006) |

Brat, I should clarify what CB said. The person I spoke to said he would make me one if he could and would get back to me. After checking the mold he was not able to make one that high. I think he said that he could do 18". Mike Long Island, NY 06 XB12X Black of course |

Brat, I do not think it will. I am 6' also and I needed to get the shield up to 21" minimum to get the wind up above my head. Mike Long Island, NY 06 XB12X Black of course |

I also brought a CB 16". But I'm 5 9 1/2" and had the seat lower by 1.5 ". I'm not having any of the trouble that the taller riders are having. I feel the same degree of wind protection that I had from a Road Glide that I traded in for the Uly. Look at the V.3 Micro Swirl Edging product at www.saeng.com. They advertise that this edging will give a 5" rise in the air flow. It sounds like the over 6' riders need about 3 more inches of air flow height. Might be worth a try, at least in theory it sounds good. |

Bienhoabob, That V.3 MicroSwirl Edging might be worth a try. The other thing it might cure is the sun reflection on the top of the shield, at times it is like a little arc welding flash in my eyes. Anyway, as luck has it, I only live about 30 or 40 miles from Columbus, Nebraska where the Saeng factory is at. I'll call them and ask about trying out that edging. Has anyone tried this stuff on any of their bikes? |

I just got off the phone with the Saeng guy in Columbus, NE. He said it typically lifts the air 3" and sometimes up to 6" depending on the windshield configuration. I was wrong and it is more like 80 miles from my house so that is quite a ways for January even if it is over 50 degrees. The Saeng guy said he would be there if I gave him a time that I would show up. They are only a shipping warehouse for their goods which he says also includes bow-hunting gear which is a separate business. At $12.90 a foot it would be around $40 which is OK if it works and not OK if it doesn't. That would make that windshield about a $200 system. Again, OK if it works but money down the drain if otherwise. I'm not sure about when I would ride over there, probably as soon as I get a wild hair but not today. it looks as though it works by creating turbulence, what affect does it have on fuel economy, speed! Not that I'm worried about buying more juice, just useful range! PS I've emailed Cee Baileys (for the second time, they haven't replied to my first several days ago) to ask about the 18" and to get them to post here or email me! Well after cutting down my 16" Cee B. shield 1" at a time the final out come for me is a 10" shield. That is what is needed to get clean air around my helmet. I am convinced that a 21"-22" shield is what is needed to get me behind the shield and the wind over my head. I must say that the addition of the stock shield to the 16" worked pretty well although it didn't look good. I could still see over it and the wind protection was good. If there was a laminar lip for the 16" or 18" Cee B. that was full width and added 3" to 5" of height I think that would be the ticket. Or to get Cee B. to make a 22". I am using the stock seat. I am 6'-0" tall and have a 31.5" inseam. Mike Long Island, NY 06 XB12X Black of course (Message edited by rkc00 on January 29, 2006) (Message edited by rkc00 on January 29, 2006) |

I agree. I got the CB 16" and the wind blast and turbulence is pretty intense. The next trick will be to put on some Saeng microswirl edging. When will the insanity end? |

My first email to them was on the 17th January, the second on the 25th, it's now the 30th and no reply to either! PS, pity it's not Pizza Hut, isn't their motto, get it in 15 minutes or it's free! Could one of you folks trying out these different windshields take a measurement for me? I'm 6'2" with a 32" inseam. When I am seated on the stock ULY seat the stock windshield is level with a point located 14" below my nose/upper lip. I'm trying to figure a starting point for a taller shield. My 93 Glide shield hits just at my upper lip/nose, and suits me just fine no matter what helmet I wear. Thanks Milo (why of course, it's Orange!) |

The part that's different is the Uly shield is slanted much differently than the electraglide and wyou sit further away on the electra glide. I have an Ultra and a Uly so I know where you're coming from. Strangely enough I am 6'2" with a 32" inseam also. I have the taller Buell shield ordered and I will post those results when it comes in. |

As I've posted before, I took a 12" over Cee Bailey and cut it down 3" to a 9" shield which is +4 1/2 over stock. I am 6-2 with 32" inseam. It works. Helmet clear and shoulders and chest protected. The barn door solution will not work. It would have to be so tall, it would look silly, and a shield that big will create the dead air space behind the shield which adds to the turberlance. I just returned from a 1700 mile trip to Death Valley and back. Forget the taller shields. |

I agree with Frank. I had to cut mine down to 10" to get clean air. I do think that a 21" to 22" would get the air over my head. I for one would like to have one that high even if it looks like ----. I ride all year round with temps sometimes in the high teens or low 20's so this would be great for those times. I think the new Buell tall shield will be the ticket for most of us due to it probable works and its price is reasonable. Here is a few pics of the cut down CB shield. I know I am a noob here, but in my experience, going bigger with the shield is not necessarily the best way to go. I have found that shield angle, and the design of the top edge play large roles in how the airflow hits you, and the amount of turbulence you experience. Sure, if you go big enough, you will be pushing an envelope of air in which you will not be buffeted. You will also be changing the load on the front suspension, and change the handling characteristics of the bike. The spacing of the stock shield gives the laminar flow that is used by the laminar lip already. Changing the shield angle and top edge, while increasing the length to maybe 4+ would be the best avenue to explore. |

Good call, Gale. I replaced my stock shield on my (ex)Burgman 650 with a Clearview XXL (about +8") to eliminate helmet buffeting. It did the job, but increased back pressure a lot, and reduced gas mileage from 48~49 mpg to about 44~46 mpg. I also lost about 10 mph from the top speed. I never much liked a cold breeze on the back of my neck. The shield had two upper, and two lower attachments, so I shimmed the lower screws as much as I felt I safely could, which tilted the top of the shield back about 5~6" and placed the top edge right at eye level. I thought that might pose a problem, but it wasn't. The result was a silent envelope of air. More air was forced up the back of the screen, due to the larger hole at the bottom, reducing back pressure to stock levels. I also gained back the speed I'd lost, and actually improved gas mileage to 50~51 mpg's. If that CB 22" is a look-through, or nearly so, you might want to experiment with backward tilt. Steve Gear up! |
