I have been thinking about having my wheels and frame powdercoated or painted. I also considered having my frame nickel plated (I know there are a few guys on here who have had that done). I am trying to figure out my best options, and not pay too much. What should I expect to pay for: Powdercoating wheels? Powdercoating Frame? Painting Frame? Nickel Plating Frame? Polishing Swingarm? Polishing Tailsection? Polishing Wheels? Jet Hot Coating the Pipes? (Message edited by toomanytoys on February 01, 2006) |

Painting is usually cheaper, but that depends on how much prep work is involved. Powder coating is next in the price range and is mucho stronger than the paint, especially on your wheels. If you are looking at the wheels alone, I prefer polished or chromed wheels over painted or powder coated, just for the looks. You need to decide what you want your bike to look like first, a dark street machine or an eye catching shiney ride. Jet Hot coating your pipe is a great thing as it will help keep the pipe (and your leg) a bit cooler and will add a personal touch to your ride. I personally found a factory blue ceramic coated header for my X-1 on Ebay, and I have seen the silver ceramic coated pipes on there as well for decent prices, do you want a specific color or are you looking for a "polished" look for your pipe? For your tail section and swingarm, I prefer chrome over polishing, as it stays shiny better with MUCH less effort. It does cost though, as mine cost me $400 each for the swingarm and tail, but it is worth the effort to have it chromed. Not sure about the frame cost, but if you find a good and reputable chromer/powdercoater they may be able to work a deal for you. good luck and keep us posted as to what you end up doing. Karl |

I too would like to know the price on Jet coating the headers. There are a couple people on Ebay that offer powder coating... start with them and get thier price ideas. I got lucky my tail section is gonna cost me about $10.oo b/c my brother in law works for a factory that has a powdercoating machine. |

Well take a look an see. The frame is powdercoated to a luster a kin to polished aluminum. The wheels are painted and the exhaust is Jet coated and polished. The swing arm, cases, rockers, caliper clamps and various other tid bits have been polished...

"Chevysolid" My 2000 M2 header is arriving at Jet-Hot today for the "Sterling" coating inside and out. The estimate was $120.00. I know there are cheaper vendors out there, but they'll send you a nice info packet including video.I have included a copy of their warranty for you to see. Looks pretty solid to me.( not affiliated with Jet-Hot in any manner) "Rags" |

Spidy giving all three in one very swell looking picture.. If your gonna polish stuff you still might want to PC it so you don't have to keep polishing it... |

Is there anybody in the Phoenix area who can give me an idea of what it would cost me to powdercoat my wheels and/or frame? I appreciate the opinions and the picture (that is a great looking ride spidey). I agree that maybe polishing would be a lot more effort, but I don't mind puting a bit of time into polishing once in a while. Especially with large flat areas like the tailsection and swingarm. they tend to be easier to touch up than the smaller more intricate, harder to reach parts. I may look into sending the pipe in to be coated as well. |

Ceejay, I thought about doing the PC clear over polished parts, but in talking with a couple of different PC places around here, they all say that it will give the material a hazy look to the shine and I would be better off just powder coating the entire piece in a "chrome" finish. It's not actually chrome, but when applied right will give the appearance of chrome. |

Good point Blue, I guess you would call it a brushed finish that I put on my wheels/cam cover/primary and then cleared it with regular paint and it didn't change the look, but it could be when you polish the PC doesn't have anything to stick to, but I aint into shiney stuff much so it wasn't a problem for me. Prolly be a good experiment, and worth the ten bucks for a small part to find out |
