I am installing my Micron today, and as I am putting the headers on, I looked to see if the old gasket looked good, but I don't see one there at all! No rubber, no paper. Nothin. I checked on the old headers, nothing there. Garage floor is clean. I have an 05 12R. Obviously I am missing something, either visually or literally. Any help? |

The gasket is stuffed up inside the exhaust opening in the head. Looks like steel woven threads/steel wool. I'm sure it's in there. |

Pull it out with some needle nosed pliers. The soot makes it blend in to the port wall. They are there, just be careful to grab only the gasket. |

Yea, I found it after a local dealer told me they had them and they were mesh. I have not removed them yet. Forum wisdom on removing them? Micron directions do not say to replace, just make sure they are up in there. Manual says replace. Point A) I want pipe on tonight - BUT Point B) I never want to have to do this again if I can help it |

Replace them and don't tighten them too much. Also, ask some of the local racers which ones they use. As I recall, the regular HD ones may have a tendency to spread too far, blocking the port somewhat, if the nuts are tightened too far. |

Mr_cuell, I may be wrong but I think IF you use the screaming eagle ones they will not spread out like the stock H.D ones... Correct me If I`m wrong guys... |

Jonathan, Replace them, use the stock ones, not the screaming eagle ones. The screaming eagle ones probably would work OK on the type of pipe end used by the Micron, but I never use them on the standard flared end Buell pipes, they just don't have enough compression range and sealing. Call me anal, but I radiused and polished the ends on the Micron header pipes a little bit so that it had a slipperier fit on the gasket, which helps it to displace the gasket to the outside rather than merely crushing the gasket into the port. Probably would work fine without doing this, but like you said, I wanted to do it right the first time. Give me a call when you get a chance. |

what do you do with ported heads? the origional gaskets squish into a stock port! Im gonna make a set of aluminum ones does anybody have any expierience with this? Ive done it on jap bikes and you can match the port to it exactly. |

Thomas_Iindemann, I wd. expect there wd. be really no difference between ported and non ported , as I don`t believe unless the Xb heads are different ... That you will Not be taking any meat out of that area to worry about that... |

actually there is a considerable amount gone as they are trying to raise the roofs as much as possible to the point that there is about a .060-.080" lip at the top I have made them quite abit on 4cyl jap heads with good success just curious about a harley |

Just wonder what grit you finished off the intakes and exhaust..The rim around this port looks wider up top on this picture did you remove meat from all around this outer rim gasket surface...? |

I see.. I useily finish the exhaust off with alot finer more like your combustion areas , a mirror finish not that it needs a mirror finish as carbon will soon take care of that, But for the time it takes no big deal, anyways I always get them like a mirror as for the intake I use 60 - 80 grit, each to their own, all is good better than the stock rough casting finish :-) |

I like the old style minimal volume exhaust gaskets. James sells them now I think. The big ones can squish out and oclude the port. |

A rough cast finish on the intake isn't always bad... The fuel can and will sheet on a "polished" finish in the intake. Don't polish the intake manifold either. Atomization is your friend . |
