hello, i just bought this bike on Sat the 28th. The salesman got on it, started right up and while it was still running, pushed it outside! It idled great and sounded great! He got outside and rode it for about 3-4 min! It sat for about an hour, i loaded it up for the trip home(about 1 1/2). Got home, got it off the truck and the battery was dead! Charged it up and still wont run right. Last night i got it running, but it sputtered and popped and i had to keep it running about 2000 rpms so it wouldnt die..well it did anyways, just dropped rpms and quit! Today i charged it back up and checked the volts, it was about 12.5. Now it will turn over, just doesnt seem like its getting any spark!! Im going to change plugs tomorrow and hope thas the issue! Anyone else have any ideas on what the problem could be? It was made in July of 05 and been sitting in the showroom since, should i change the battery too? thanks for any replys | ||

Sounds like it is in the charging system. I would check the voltage at the battery while running. It should be 14VDC or more. If it isnt, then it is not charging the battery and not supplying the coil with enough power. I would also check to make sure you dont have a loose battery cable or ground wire. | ||

That or the battery itself is going bad or is bad. Here's my post from the other site. Dunno if you got to read it yet. Well, the fix is easy. As for other types of plugs. I myself haven't tried to cross reference them with anything else. I'm currently using the Buell Pro plugs myself. Another thing that crossed my mind though. You said you had to charge you battery. The symptoms your mentioning remind me of what happened when my parents Sportster's battery went. We used one of those backup jump start units and while it was hooked up the bike ran fine. Minute you took it off the sucker would barely idle and you couldn't rev it without it sputtering and dying. Your symptoms lead me to believe you battery might be bad. I know it sound weird, but being you had to charge it to begin with kinda makes me think you might want to check that out. BTW, if you replace you battery. Remember to get a MAINTENCE FREE one. Otherwise you'll find out how corrosive battery gases are because many small batterys need a vent hose. The Buell's use maintence free which leaves you with no place to run the hose. | ||

Exact same problem here, dead battery and TPS set wrong. Took it back and they reset the TPS and replaced the battery and I was good to go. Ken | ||

i guess i kind of just assumed on the other board that you could get it running but it was so ROUGH that it wouldnt idle instead of more smooth and just dying?? more along the lines of a fouled plug. but if that is not the case then yes i would check the few simple things like connections and the idle adjustment. anything more than that and i would be making the dealer mess with it. i am assuming it is a brand new bike since you said 06. if so there is no reason that you should have to replace the battery the day you get it home, much less anything else. if that stuff is needed i would be right back to the dealer getting it taken care of. i would think ANY stand up dealer would not have a problem making things right for you. even though you would have to have the drive back to them and home again. | ||

just a follow up on my situation... I changed the plugs today after work, it only took 3 hours(lol) man that sucked ass! Im glad there are only 2! I should have taken no-rice's advise and do it the way he told me! But my ••••••• went in threw the top like the service guy told me to do! Thats ok though, now i know not to do it again!! Id say about 80% of my work was done threw the hole n0-rice told me to go threw!! Anyways, got it all back together, fired it up, and to my suprise it ran and idled! It threw black smoke out for awhile, then alittle blue, its 25 degrees out. Im in the garage but its still cold! Its still bogs once in awhile, with some hesitation at the hit of the throttle, but im guessing its just really loaded up and needs a good ride out on the road!! Seems like its running rich! Do they set these up rich from the factory when new? It would make sense i guess but i dont know.. Ill have it out hopefully Thursday. Its supossed to be like 45 and sunny! Im still calling my dealer and letting him know whats up! Good news is, is that he said if i cant fix it with the plugs, or think its more then the battery(which thats ruled out) then he will send a tech to my house!! Thank god, i didnt want to haul it back!! ok, enough rambling.....got to get in the shower in time to watch 24!! C-ya Ian | ||

BTW, do you think the TPS is off? I dont even know where the hell it is(probably under the tank). Is it possible even with only 13 miles on it it could be off? | ||

it is quite possible that static timing could be off and the ecm could need to be reset. It will not hurt the bike to have it done. | ||

Ian, Check your connections where the mag and voltage regulator plug together. Its under the cover of the drive belt. I was stranded twice and replaced some parts that didn't need to be. Same thing happened to some Harley ridin buddies of mine. There are so many connections in this cramped space that it is easy for them to "un-snap" and hang a little loose. | ||

I don't know why you are asking what you should be doing? I would have that bike back in the shop, and the service department should be figuring out what the bike needs... at their expense. I figure you would want the bike running correctly from the start. The longer you keep it in your garage, the more it is going to cost you. | ||

yep agree, they will be here in the morning to pick it up and fix it right!! I really didnt wanna take the 3 hour round trip myself, so i told them to come pick it up!! They said, "we will be there at 9am" Cool! Its frustrating, but its also January(well February in 3 hours). So there is time.. thanks guys, ill give an update to the problem when they find it!! | ||

I think cold weather is an enemy of this bike . My bike runs so much better when the weather is above 50 degrees ! | ||

well, they called me tody to tell me it was the plugs i put in!! I totally forgot to check the gap on them.. They said on plug was .38 and the other was .60.. im guessing that would cause some issues.. They rode it(not sure how long) and said it was good to go.. They wanted me to pick it up....UM, I DONT THINK SO!! I told them i thought sense they picked it up, they would bring it back, well they are going to call me in the morning to let me know whats up! I feel like they OWE me if i have to go pick it up even though i didnt check the gap on the plugs i put in. The damn thing shouldnt have been loading up on me right off the truck with 12 miles on it!! |
