I used no sealant. You'll need to cut down an allen wrench to size. Rubber seals sometimes can be tossed in the freezer to size better. DAve |

Shove a shop rag over the well where all the tubes and wires snake down behind the engine. If you drop an Allen wrench in this pit, you'll need one of those telescoping magnets to get it out. |

keep the gasket sealing surfaces dry, dry, dry, bone dry. Did I say to keep them dry? The torque spec for one of the 1/4-20 bolts (bolt 15 in the manual) is too high. Suggest tightening that bolt to it's lower end torque spec of 10 FT*LB (120 IN*LB). Going to the maximum specified 13 FT*LB (156 IN*LB) can result in a stripped bolt. |

What made you change the gaskets? I have some oil leaking from the front cylinder head, and am wondering if the gaskets may be the problem. I am sure it would be a good idea to change mine. I have 14,000 miles on my X1 now. |

If you made it to 14000 with out a change, your way ahead of the curve! Your way overdue! Easy fix, around $40 for the whole rocker box gasket set. Make sure to use a torque wrench, don't guess or you will be doing it again! Brad |

My front gskt was leaking when I got the bike. On disassembly, I found that the rear gskt was the new style and the front was the old two-piece. Also found evidence that whoever did the work must have not let the tappet bleed down or somehow bound things up when he tightened things up-the first time- then evidently took it back apart-and put it back with the old gskt. I swear that valve sounds just a skosh loud... I wonder if I might have a slightly bent pushrod?? I put mine back Clean and Dry as per Badweb suggestion. Thanks Blake. No leaks after approx. 300 miles.Got the gskt set from DaveS. Nice job to break in on. Go for it and let us Know how it goes. |

Hey Buellbozo, I live in Gulfport MS. I was at the Dungout on Government Street in OS a few Sundays ago and I think you rode by. I was excited to see a Buell. And I thought I was the only Buell rider around here? Lets get together for a ride. |

It didn't show up. I checked again this morning. I think we're going stand at a bar on the road that leads to the beach along 90. If you were coming across the bridge to OS you'd take the first right, turn left and it's just up the road on the left. Hope to see yoou at there. |

Yeah, that'd be Sweets... I live downtown on Washington behind the business buildings. I've got to decide whether to be stuck here for the duration or bail before it starts... High probability I'll be at the Master Grill mid-afternoon after the parade. Corner of 90 and Hanley. For those in other places wonderin' what kind of parade??? MARDI GRAS !!! Revel in the Rubble !!! |

2 more questions: 1. What side do the umbrella valves go on? I took them off, and am too stupid to remember what side they go on. 2. Do I put anti-seize or lock-tite on the bolts in the rocker boxes? I don't have a shop manual. I will be investing in one soon. I should not have done this job without it. Otherwise, all is going really well with this, all things considered. |

Umbrella valves seldom need replacing but put them on the intake sides anyway. And you shouldn't need anything on the threads if you tighten to the correct torque. Hope that helps. |

UMBRELLA VALVES, well why do you think BMC went to the PVC VALVES in the rocker arm covers on the BLAST and XB Models ??? "YOU WILL NOT GET THE CORRECT "TORQUE" WITH "DRY THREADS" !!! |

You might try drilling out the small countersunk drain hole next to the umbrella valve to 1/8 as suggested elsewhere on this site. I did this on mine.I have also run my breathers to a puke can. I haven't had any leaks yet since installing the new gaskets. I emphatically support LaFayettes call for lubing threads-sometimes with Loc-Tite, sometimes anti-sieze, sometimes oil. No thread should be assembled dry unless there is a compelling reason-and there aren't many.ESPECIALLY with dissimilar metals- like steel screws in aluminum castings. When I came up this was simply considered "good shop practice." Now I'm going out on a limb with my thoughts on torqueing to spec... No, on second thought, its too late... Usual disclaimer applies... |

Do the rocker box mods. It's in the KV with pictures and all. Takes 2 minutes and help a bit. Thhumrella valves DO need replacing from time to time. The rubber gets hard and they don't seal as well. Use Loctite blue, buy it by the gallon! Seriously, the new Loctite sticks work great. Much less sloppy than the liquid in a bottle. YMMV Brad |

Well, the replacement went smoothly. I changed out all the old gaskets, did the rocker box mod as suggested, and got it all back together. I guess that is a victory on its own. I have some other electrical problems though that were plagging me before the mod. I'll keep you all updated. ONce I figure out the electrical, then I will find out if my gasket job was good or not. |
