Buellzebub, How do you like the E-Series. I have on one my m2 and with the stock 12 disks with it. Like it but seems to resonate off of the pavement. i have to wear plugs even on short 15 minute rides round town.. Just wondering if you are having the same expierence..

Steve: are you running it with the stock header?

i like it so far but have only put a coupla hundred miles on,it is a little on the loud side at idle but on the road it sure sounds sweet.

My mechanic is down at the factory until saturday, when he returns i am going to dyno tune it to see what happend when i vary the disc stack [running the stock 12 now].

so far my seat of pants dyno shows that it really helps the pickup from 3k onward and throttle only wheelies are a lot easier, the bike seems to be much more happy revving [i think this is due to the race header more than the muffler].

have you tried the difusers that shield part of the exit area? i think that you may be able to tailor the open area to suit, i think they had 90,180 and 360 degree covered difusers in the instruction manual.

current dyno numbers, stock with race aircleaner and 45 pilot jet: 75 lb/ft torque, 77 HP

Is it my imagination or is your e-series hanging down at the rear? Look at Duane's (Buellzebub) picture and see how his is level. Are you still using the black "Z" bracket? I had a fellow Buelligan here in town show up with his e-series hanging down. 2 seconds of looking and 10 min. worth of work fixed his situation. Bottom line, remove the "Z" bracket. It makes for a little more difficult install but, with a little guidence it can be done.
To instal:
1: Remove stock muffler, "Z" bracket and rubber isolators from the rear case mounts.
2: Slide elbow over header with clamp
3: With elbow hanging down twist slip-on on the elbow.
4: Once you are on the elbow far enough to align the rear mount of the e-series with the rear mounting hole where the "Z" bracket mounted, let the elbow rotate back down about 15 deg.
5: Install one rear rubber isolator in rear most mount, where "Z" bracket was mounted, with metal sleeve.
6: Rotate slip-on ~10 deg clockwise (looking from rear of bike)
7: Insert long bolt, with big washer, from inboard side of mount (Note: This bolt is fine threads vs: coarse on all other 5/16" bolts on your Buell).
8: (the tricky part) As you rotate the elbow and slip-on up, turn the slip-on counter-clockwise until vertical and slide the bolt thru the sleeve in the rubber isolator. All of this is required because the bolt for the rear mount is about 2.5" long and will not clear the cast aluminum swing arms. On an X-1 you can insert the long bolt from the outboard side since there is no footpeg or frame in the way.
9: Big washer on bolt on outboard side. Loctite on nut (yes even if it is a nylock nut, trust me, been there didn't do that.)
10: Insert bolt in front mount and tighten everything to factory torque specs.
11: FEEL THE TORQUE!

Congratulations on keeping the stock rear fender. It gives the bike an originality character. Had to ditch mine (2 of them) long ago because of cracks.

I posted some pix of a rubber mount that I built for my S1/Supertrapp on this board on Feb 5. I've got 1,000 or so miles on it now and it's hanging in (pun intended). Cheap fix, too, just buy a rubber tailpipe hanger kit from your local Hi-Lo auto parts store (<$5) and cut to fit.

I have also noticed a lot of resonance off the road. I have been playing around with the number of disks, I even tried the minimum of 4 - not particularly quiet but kills power above 5,000rpm.
I have been switching recently between 8 and twelve discs.
8 gives me a nice compromise between power/noise, the top end is not great but pick up from just over idle and mid-range is very strong. I'm doing most of my riding around town these days and the euro gearing means that this is more important than all out power.
I fit all 12 disks for longer runs but find that this gives some hesitancy just off idle. Pulling away from standstill with the tall gearing and the less than predictable response at low revs leads to too much noise and clutch slip for my tastes.

O.K. I give up...Can anyone tell me what the trick is to getting the old stock muffler off my S1? The service manual says to take out the bolts front & back, loosen the muffler clamp, & pull her off. She's definitely loose, but I can't seem to move it away from the front mount. I loosened up the bolt on the tab on the header, then loosened up the header flanges, but still no luck. She's very loose now, but I still can't get it away from the front mount to pull it away from the header. Any suggestions???

It is a pain! You either need to be able to raise the front end or lean the bike waaaay over to the right. That will allow the muffler to pivot far enough, on the elbow, to clear the front header support. This is one of many reasons to with the 2001 header support and something other than stock. Just my $0.02 YRMV.

I've been reading all the posts for some time and made the decision to go with the BOSS for my 2000 X1, even after reading about all the mounting problems. It only took about an hour to mount it up with only minor modifications. Thanks to all that posted suggestions...it REALLY helped! During the install I kept thinking to myself "Something must be wrong, this is going too easy". I'll be glad to post some close up pics.

Now I need to upload a map to the Power Commander to match my mods. Using the stock ECM and a Force Sidewinder..any suggestions??

Still waiting for Spring in Minnesota.

Is the new race muffle and header available for a 99M2? I called a dealer recently and they indicated that these components were no longer available for a 99M2. Do you know of a dealer that can order, and better yet, give a little discount?

The instruction sheet I have is generic, and states: The Race Muffler and Race Header Kits fit all 1999 and later Lightning X1, Cyclone M2 and Thunderbolt S3/T, S1 and S1 "White Lightning" models and the following models without lowers: 1997-98 M-2, S3/T and the 1996 S-2 and S-2T models. The instructions were revised 3/13/01 so I would guess pipe and muffler are available for these models. Can't really recommend a dealer, BRAG or HOG membership will usually get you 10% off.

Part numbers are listed as:

MUFFLER RACE KIT 91424-99YA
99 and later X1, M2, and S3 models

HEADER RACE KIT 65400-99YA
99 and later X1 and S3 models

HEADER RACE KIT 91423-99YA

1997 s1 c/w race aircleaner and header, carb kit. and dyno tuned.

tested on a dynojet 250

baseline [stock with race aircleaner only]
74.2 lb/ft 76.9 hp

15 discs 80.7 lb/ft torque, 87.5 hp
12 discs 77.9 lb/ft torque, 84.1 hp

open endcap pulls lower than with 15 discs

above 70 lb/ft torque from 2500-6400 rpm

haven't tried more than 15 discs yet [screws too short]

Does anyone have any good evidence of the performance effects of Jet Hot or similar coatings on the headers? Something like in the form of back-to-back dyno runs with an uncoated vs coated headers?

And lacking that, does anyone have a stock header for a 98S1W that could be borrowed for a set of such dyno runs? I'd pay for shipping it to/from and would return it in the same shape as received.

Ok,
What's the dillio on the updated exhaust bracket replacement program.

Does the old bracket have to be broken to get it replaced, or is it replaced upon request of the owner regardless of the current state? I do not wat to cause a ruckus, but I would hate to pass up the new bracket only to have it fail weeks after the free replacement program is up.

Being the Pro-active guy that I am, I just asked for mine since my isolators were looking ragged. Another Buelligan had bad isolators on his old style and since those parts are not available any more he asked for a replacement. Everyone I know that has had theirs replaced had it done at no charge.

I am interested in any input on the performance of the Wileyco slip-on. They list a version for the X-1 and for the M-2. I would imagine that the X-1 version should fit my S3T as well? Is anyone out there running one? Can you tell me about ease of installation and results? Any dyno charts available?

I've tried contacting Wileyco through the e-mail listed on their website, but had no response after a week and a half. They don't seem to be very customer service oriented. The pipe sure does look nice however - all polished stainless - with a great warranty.

I have been looking at the White Bros. E series, but am disappointed in the finish of the outlet pipe and the welds. Any help here would be appreciated.
