The question arises--why would you paint stainless steel? A little elbow grease and Mothers polish and they shine like chrome. That being said,if there was any sort of oil/grease/dirt/etc. the paint will do that.Sticks even better if you bake it in oven.Of course, for the best adhesion, the pipes need to be bead blasted. |

I didnt ask to be flamed on my own post!I asked for advise. Do what you want on your own bike, but headers on my 9 look two toned after a whole day of riding. I ride the hell out of my bike so they dont stay clean long, I'd rather be riding that buffing my exhaust everyday. Plus I would have baked it but the whole reason I didnt is because I painted them on the bike. If I took them off I would have ceramic coated them. |

Did you heat cycle the paint. Warm it up for a few minutes and then let the headers cool down to room temp. Do that several times to bake on the paint. I had to do that with my headers on my old cage. They where aluminacoat headers and still had to do it. Good luck. I am just going to polish mine with mothers. |

When the paint starts to smoke a little then let them cool down. Sorry I forgot to add that detail. |

They are stainless steel. That is just how they look from the factory. Do a search on header polish, I think. There will be pics of some nice headers done only with Mothers metal polishing with instructions. Sorry about this misguided post. |

Well why is that after scratching them on rocks, and riding it around for a month they havent changed? |

Only 50 minutes drying time seems short. Might want to let it sit overnight. Did the rear header do okay up near the cylinder head? |

And please recognize that no one "flamed" you. Jim simply asked a polite honest question deserving of a polite honest answer. Capice? |

What coating is the gold stock headers? Its not a coating thats what stainless does on its own after heat cycles the '06 headers definitely look different though, like there is a coating on there. is this not the case? way more gold looking than my '05 looks. (btw, i dont like the look of the new headers, look like pantyhose to me. hahaa. i like 'em raw.) as a sidenote, my '05 headers seem to want to tarnish so fast. maybe its all the rain riding i did last season? they look like total sh*t right now. like rusty. gotta get some of that polish. |

Typeone, My 06 header I painted was definitely gold colored stock...had a rough finish too. Not smooth like the older ones. TK |

Flamed by a fireman. Oh, the irony! I'm glad I didn't answer first, because I was going to say the same thing Jim said. |

Oh, and btw. I've never, ever, been able to keep any kind of paint on header pipes, no matter how well I prepped them. The last time I tried was the mid-80's, though. Maybe spraypaint technology has made quantum leaps since then. |

stainless (more properly stain resistant) steel is very tough to get paint to cling to -- looks like there was some amount of foreign material on the header where the bubbling occured (even a fingerprint will be enough), or perhaps the paint was a bit thincker there and wasn't quite dry |

Blake the only reason I did not want to wait overnight is that it said it needs to be baked before 8 hours time? I dont know why, but the rear header did fine. I guess it just was not clean enough.I'm SORRY Jim about the reply I just hate when someone asks me why I did what I did as if I'm stupid or something. I know I can keep them clean but I have limited ride time already so thats the last thing I want to do all the time. If I can get a pic down to size I will post one, I think you guys will like the results. |

To me it looks like the '06 headers are bead blasted or something to make then more smoother/duller. They look different in all the press photos that I have seen, instead of the rough, scratchy appearance of the previous years. |

Too bad you are not closer as I have both a bead blaster and a nice buffer so you could go either way.I usually take my S-2 pipes off and give them the buffer treatment once a year, and other than that a littler Mothers once in a while. They shine up very nicely. And I was perhaps a bit snippy, must be getting grumpier in my old age--just had another of those b-day things,ya know. |
