Well, I got a repack kit from American Sport Bike a while back, along with some other goodies. Figured that I would drain the primary, pull the muffler,[a Vance and Hines] put the upgraded muffler hanger on, put the upgraded primary adjustment shoe...etc. Pulling the muffler stinks!!! But the real story was trying to repack the muffler!!! The thing came apart ok,[I needed the repack, too] I followed the instructions, but the paper tube would not slide over the mesh innerds of the muffler. I tried to slide the packing over the mesh without the tube...nada good idea! The repack material, with my pushing and pulling BURST wide open. I now have a pile of whatever it is. The little paper pillowcase tore like tissue! I'll call Al to see what I did wrong, but is there something a little more rugged? Can I just try to pack the thing with the material and no pillow? Also, how do you keep the header to muffler joint from seizing? I had to heat it, then WD-40 to get it off. Anyway, Happy New Year! | ||

I just pulled my mufffler the other day when I changed the primary fluid...kind of a pain, but didn't have anything seize, it was tight...but didn't seize. I don't have any info for you on the repacking as I haven't done it yet...I too have a V&H, so I will be interested to find out what you did wrong. | ||

Silas, Try wrapping the perf-tube with something smooth,like al-foil, or maybe a sheet of magazine paper. For the header joint I use that high-temperature copper sealant. Good luck, Butch | ||

i ended up taking apart the packing, wrapping it around the baffle and then i twisted wire to hold it in place, worked like a charm! | ||

Hey I have a Vance&Hines slip on that is too loud, I've seen a "Quiet Repack" kit for sale on some other boards, but also read here that the American Sport Bike kit is the best. Is there any way to use the American Sport Bike kit, but make it quieter too? Such as use two of them, or maybe 1.5 of them? Or one bag, and some loose stuffing? I'm also planning on getting the newer style front muffler hanger, by the way. | ||

Kinda like a whistling thump maybe a thumping whistle. Ya definitely hear it spool up, but it happens REAL fast, and when you back off, you hear a WHOOSH when the controller vanes open. It's much quieter than the usual piped Buell or H-D. AL | ||

Jayvee, You'll never get two of the American Sport Bike kits in a V&H. They are already too large and dense as it is. You do have to work a bit to get them in. The trick to installing the kit is to put masking or duct tape around the the edge of the inner perforated core to prevent snagging. (Don't forget to remove the tape before you button things up or you will have problems with reassembly.) I've used the kit on both V&H and Supertrapp. The V&H is the older 2" core for S2's and non "W" S1's. It is really quite mellow compared to standard V&H packing. As mentioned above, the cardboard "installation" tube is not large enough in diameter to go arond the outside of the 2.5" muffler core. It does fit over the 2" version. I would use Al's packing kit on either one again and will when the time comes. Brad | ||

If I wanted to use the now loose material to repack, what is the technique? Also, what about the Supertrapp disc type mufflers? I went online and saw some dirt track/atv simple black slip-ons for $180 or so... (Message edited by silas_clone on January 06, 2006) | ||

So far...like everything else mechanical, sometimes it is better to just do it right. Also, like everything aftermarket, sometimes you gotta improvise and adjust. The "blooming onion" muffler repack kit DEFINITELY does not fit a Vance and Hines SSRII as described in the instructions provided... If you completely disassemble both ends of the can, put the rear end back in, along with the already attached "perf tube", then use a flat [I used a piece of sanded LUAN plywood] to jam the fiberglass material in between the can and perf tube...well, then it fits. Now to attach the header end with the supplied pop rivets...yes, you must drill out the original rivets with the bit supplied in the kit. The good news, I peeled that cheesy looking tin Vance and Hines plate off of the can...the bad news, I gotta go to the store again to get some hi-temp silicone for the riveted end. I called Al at American Sport Bike and he said he wasn't really sure why the kit did not fit as described, but trust me, it does not fit. I think I'd like to try that MOROSO spiral flow set-up...I held a CHERRY BOMB in my mitts yesterday...I would worry that the weight of the thing would add to stress from vibrations. I really think that having to repack a glass pack at $5 to $35 a shot is not the answer... | ||

Hmmm, not sure what you did to yours, but mine went together with no problems. I only removed the rear cover. Maybe it's because it's the 2" version? | ||

I don't doubt it, I never said I was smart. But the larger version takes a little more work. Just pulled the primary cover and upgraded the adjustment shoe [yep, I had the thinner one]. Pulled the plugs to adjust the drive chain...they are white-tipped!!! I hope it was just the blown out muffler making it lean, but Murphy's law usually kicks in about now. I really like how these engines have progressed since the 70's. | ||
