I have done just 700 miles on my new ULY and have noticed that all the black coating on the exhaust muffler is flaking off and the metal underneath is rusting up at a rapid rate. This is the first Buell I have owned. Is this normal? I am in the UK where there is a ton of salt on the road at this time of year but I have washed it thoroughly after each ride. |

It has not happened to any of the Buells I have owned (including the Uly.) They don't salt the roads around here, so perhaps that is the difference. The mufflers do accumulate some rust, but I have never had paint flake off. And its not a lot of rust. |

ive 3500 kms on mine and i just took my muffler off the put on the drummer and the stock one is looking pretty rusted and the paint is flaking off. if it is from salt, that stuff would sure be corrosive. ive only ridin it a few times after the roads have been salted and then i wash the bike really good. |

Unless you go to a stainless steel muffler I just suspect that the oxidation of the iron will be something we all will have to deal with. Sounds like a sound reason to buy the SS Drummer if you are so inclined to get a Drummer. I'll expect a small percentage from each SS Drummer sale from this time forth. |

My stock muffler wasn't on long enough to rust and the pro series is ceramic coated which seems to be holding up quite well. |

Maybe Electroglider is right but in the UK a Uly costs a little over $14000 and for that money I foolishly expected a little plating on my exhaust system. |

Is that surface rust or is that rusting through? I'd be back at the dealership working out a replacement either way. DAve |

It is surface rust and the paint peeling. |

what is the weather like where you live. mine looks the same way and i live in cold rainy and sometimes snow. i guess the stock muffler doesnt hold up to the elements. i wonder if there is a coating that could be applied that would do the job. I am waiting for my drummer to show up and as its a modified stock i am going to have the same issue again and that sucks. |

It has been cold here the last couple of weeks. Not much snow yet. I did not have this problem with my XB9S that I had for 2 years. |

i wonder if it is a problem with the factory coating. it seems that the conditions arent that extreme. i could see after a couple of seasons but this is too soon |

i think that would look a little tacky underneeth my uly. ride it yes but i would like what i spend my hard earned money on to last a reasonable period of time. Wind, how is your drummer holding up, any signs of rust. |

You can send your headers and muffler to Jet Hot and have the coated. Looks nice, runs cooler, and won't blue or rust. |

A India: That is why I keep my Buell indoors during the winter. Here in the netherlands they use salt also and Buells don't like it. |

I use spray silicone on engine, bolts, and basically anywhere I think it may corrode. Keep it off brakes, and tires of course! Brian |
