What is the point of the plastic piece that mounts on the right side of the frame and blocks the gap between the engine cylinders and the frame - it seems like nothing more than a piece to prevent any airflow from reaching the rear cylinder - perhaps for looks? Many have added a right side air scoop and rave about it - how about just removing the right side air blocker? Does it serve any useful purpose?

Small Air Scoop actually. Small, but does help. |

I think the stock right side scoop does direct air to the rear cylinder even if just by a much smaller amount than the left side intake. It prevents turbulence from the front cylinder from robbing the rear cylinder of air. It keeps a small amount or air directed close to and around the front cylinder going to the rear. just my guess... |

If you look at how it terminates at the rear you can also see that when stopped, fan running, it helps channel the cool air over the heads from the front through to the back and past the fan. |

I have removed my as well before the last summer started. I don't notice the bike running any differently. It looks like it creates somewhat of a channel for air to go from front cylinder and exit out of the rear of the back cylinder. Doesn't look like I would hurt anything if it was removed. Also, the cylinders should get a bit better cooling when the bike is going. Look wise, it definitely looks better without the piece. |

i suspect EPA noise abatement issues are responsible, but it has been claimed that it aids cooling in some manner that is not intuitively obvious. meaning i cant see how the damn thing could help. |

Fullpower, I don't see the piece playing any part in noise (or any other pollution) control here. I think it is supposed to either channel more cool air through the two cylinders or to keep the hot air in so that it doesn't flow out to the rider. |

Anyone fitted the right side air scoop like this?

Dan, recent discussion regarding the right side scoop here: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=32777&post=561207#POS T561207 |

Thanks Keys. I was looking at the one from Trojan as i'm in the UK. Does it balance height wise with the left scoop? |

Yeah, the right side scoop has been out for a while. At >$220 I think it is a lot of money. So to keep this thread on topic, wondering if removing that right side blocking piece would harm anything. |

The right side air scoop cut down the amount my fan runs by a decent amount. On my short work commuter [4miles] it never comes on now. I got mine from Trojan. Click my user name to see a pic of it installed on my bike |

Looks sweet Elff. Did you go for the glass fibre one? |

Yes I did It comes unpainted so I painted it to match the other side. Turns out the stock paint is a little on the flat side so I had to paint it twice to get it to match. The first choice was too shiney compared to the left side stock scoop |

What stock paint did you use? Did you spray both to match? Thanks Elff |

I left the stock side as is. The trojan scoop got 2 coats of Krylon and then a single coat of plasticote primer followed by a coat of clear. It worked out great. |

Sorry Elff, what is Krylon? I'm in the UK so I might have to find an alternative. What colour plasticote did you use, also was it a flat coat of clear? |

Krylon is the actual paint brand. It is very good for plastics and fiberglass. The plasticote was a flat black primer. I dont remember if the clear was flat or not. In fact, i didnt really know there was a difference and unfortunately I dont have a can to look at. |

Im sure you wont have any problems. Just make sure you get a paint that sticks to fiberglass for the base coat, then you can play with the top coats to get it to match the other black pieces on the bike. |
