I am in the presence of another 1991 RSS1200.
200 made? Must be total for '91 thru '93
I am under the impression that there are FAR fewer '91 models, especially in the US.
This bike is untitled, unregistered, all original.

Actually you can see some differences in the one I posted and the one from eBay.
One piece upper/mid fairing (two piece on eBay).
Solid mount knurled footpegs (rubber folding on the eBay bike).
Corbin seat (???? on eBay).
Oil cooler (hard to see, but I dont think so on eBay).
Gambler rear brake caliper (hard to see, think its a PM piece on eBay) |

That's the first Buell I ever rode. Way back in 93 or 94 I think. |

I am under the impression that there are FAR fewer '91 models, especially in the US.
Back when I began my co-op experience at Buell (April 1991) the RSS 1200 was just beginning to be produced. From what I remember at the time the first year (1991) was a special model for Japan only and it was introduced in the US for 1992. I was a little puzzled when I saw the ebay listing was for a 1991 RSS 1200, but maybe the distributor in Japan reduced his quantity and some were available in the US in 1991. I didn't pay that much attention to the details back then, but then again I was bouncing back and forth between Flint, MI and East Troy, WI every 3 months so who knows what happened during the months I wasn't there. I do remember coming across a memo for the new features for the 1992 RSS 1200 for Japan recently, but am unsure if any of those changes actually made it into production.
The 3 piece fairing (front and 2 sides) came out around 1992 (may have been a running change in 1991), but it was a lot easier making such a large fairing in 3 pieces rather than 1 huge part (other than keeping painted parts - in sets - in supply for production, but that is another story). I don't remember the OE pegs, but since your untouched original has billet they must be the OE ones. Corbin produced all the OE seats (and knee rests) for the RS/RSS bikes (at least since I started in 1991). The oil cooler was part of the RSS model so the ebay bike 'should' have it too, along with the new dash with an extra gauge (oil temp or oil pressure - can't remember which - but would presume oil temp because of the oil cooler). The Gambler rear caliper is definitely OE for the RS/RSS bikes (again, at least since I started in 1991). Also I see the bike in the pic your posted has the original early 5-speed primary and clutch cover, while the ebay bike has been updated to the later style.
That is an awesome RSS! Thanks for bringing back some GREAT memories! I should get my old Buell pics in order and scan some of the more interesting ones sometime... sounds like a good project for when I get back from Christmas in East Troy...

1313 - would the RS models for 1991 be the ones that were for the USA? They seem a bit more common than the RSS bikes. Uglier, too! (Sorry, that's my view of it!) That flip up rear seat section changes the look of the entire bike, even though from the middle of the seat forward, the 2 models are virtually identical. I've got all my orig bodiwork hanging in my garage, and that rear seat piece looks ugly hanging on a wire, not even mounted on a bike.

Thanks 1313. That is what I was under the impression of also.
The one at our shop is a VERY early model (not even sure if it's really a production model) that was used for display at the dealer meetings to intice dealers to pick up the Buell brand. My GM bought it off the show floor, and is Japan spec.
That is the reason for the solid mount pegs, which were not legal in the US.
The fairing was, I believe a running change and very few are still left with the one piece. Not only for the reasons that you mentioned, but it was also prone to stress cracking and when replaced or fixed, the new style was generally used.
I was also suprised to see the eBay bike was listed as a '91.

Brankin went to the same school I did, but his co-op was through Buell and not Deere like me. 'Tis a small world... He was also there quite a few years before me... |
