you would have to split the cases to change the gears. If you wanted to change the 5th gear out I would talk to Jim's or Baker about it. The reason gear ratios get tighter as you go up through the gears: The drag (resistance to acceleration) increases by the square of acceleration. if it were to take 1hp to go 1mph it would take 4hp to go 2mph and 9hp to go 3mph. In reality it isn't quite as simple as that, but it does demonstrate the principle. The gear ratios are tighter to offset this resistance and maintain mechanical advantage as your speed increases. If my post is less than coherent please ask for clarification. (Message edited by diablobrian on December 19, 2005) |

Great explanation. sounds like switching 5th will have drawbacks as well according to the principle you state. What does "split the cases" mean? sounds expensive |

Splitting the cases means tearing the motor down as far as it will go. The bottom (main case) of your motor has a seam that runs from front to back. Anything that involves splitting the cases is a Major ordeal. If you are going that far it would be wise to do any and all internal mods you intend to do to your motor (big bore, longer stroke, etc.) at that time. And yes indeed it is expensive to have it done. 125 03 xb9 and I was passed as if I was on a bicycle by Benz SLR/SLK (?). He had to be doing 150+. In my defense I wasn't topped out and trying for more would have been a waste of time. Is it just me, or does it take everyone a long time (road) to reach those speeds? I can get to 100 pretty easily, after that though it's all sit and wait. |

resistance goes up at the square of speed. |

Your Duc is fully faired and therefore more aerodynamic. that makes a big difference in coefficient of Drag. |

146 on the limiter in top of fifth on my XB12s. 212 mph on a turbo Busa verified by the dash-mounted gps. Changed my life. |

I have a 9s with the regular mods and it still pulls hard over 100. I usually am glued to the air box cover to stay out of the wind. |

142 indicated on New York State Police radar (flat level ground on I-84) slight tail wind. 3 passes and that was the best pass 138 was lowest. |
