ok....... so, my new to me bike finally showed up here from new jersey. (03 xb9r) after a few weeks of waiting for the shippers to actually do it. regardless of the fact that they shipped it without the key so i dont even know if it runs yet. they gave it to the truck driver for some reason or another instead of just putting it on the bike in the crate and now thats lost. but the thing that is even bothering me more than is that the fact that since it was the only thing i could do i checked what was supposed to be the oil and instead got an oily mess which consisted mostly of gasoline. now i am not exactly sure how that could happen on these bikes. i am sure it was gas though. little oil and mostly gas just ran off of the dip stick. and there seemed to be enough in there to put it a good inch above the lines on the dipstick. to be shipped it is supposed to be drained of all the fluids so not sure if there is even more than a trace of oil in it. how could the gas get into the oil on here though? i am kind of confused on that one and not very happy at the moment thinking that it could easily be a junk bike i just got

I would try to drain it and put fresh in. Start the bike let it warm up then change oil again. Keep an eye on it after that.

That'd freak me out, too. Thank God you couldn't start it.

Is it possible that the previous owner was attempting to "flush" the oil? Poured it in -- forgot to start and drain -- and then shipped it?

I'd do as Buellman39 says -- but only after I OFFICIALLY contacted the previous owner and related my concerns.

Also, be sure and change the filter BOTH TIMES you change the oil -- just to be safe.

Good Luck.

Flush out that crap real good. Bearings and machined services do not agree with gasoline. The bike is fuel injected so It really doesnt make sense why there is that much fuel in the oil. Unless it was running with a broken piston or broken piston rings I cant think of any logical explaination, maybe someone else on the list has had a similar issue.

ok, so i called the place and both the guys i was dealing with are gone today. talked to there mechanic (also the guy that crated it). he said that he drained the fuel but never did do the oil. he was also stumped as to how there would be fuel in the oil on my xb. all he really could say was to try draining it and refill and run it (if i ever get a key) and then check the oil and see what happens. ya great thats helpful i already planned on doing something along those lines. i had been talking to a couple of friends and thinking that maybe it was possiable if one of the plugs had fouled and they kept trying to crank it over for a bit to start it? seems like it could be a logical excuse. i have only fouled a plug on my other xb once and tried starting it for a little bit but then quit and changed plugs. no gas in that oil that i noticed but i didnt try to start it that way for very long either. this whole deal is really begining to tick me off

OK. I am going to say it. And it is not my intent to create anymore emotional distress than you are already having

Could it be that they have sent you a bike with an existing problem? If so what are the consequences for you to start it. Does that put you in any risk of them saying you caused said problem and then not be willing to make things right. Perhaps not having the key was a blessing in disguise

Did you buy this from a HD /Buell dealer? Any kind of return policy for the bike not being as described (i.e. - in working order)when purchased.

If it was from a HD/Buell dealer should you ask that it be taken to your local HD/Buell Dealer at their expense for an inspection in light of the way you found it when it arrived?

Where did the bike come from??????

I would not start the bike with described conditions.

After I changed the filter,
I would pull the oil lines off the swingarm, and rig some way to pump fresh oil through the engine, and alot of it.

And after thoroughly looking through the electricals, you know, looking for bombs :

Change filter again, re-connect oil lines, fill with oil, then try to start.

well i got the oil changed in it. the filter was full of fuel too. took the ignition switch off of the other bike and plugged it into the new one. finally got it jump started enough to run for a a few seconds and it is only hitting on one cylinder. didnt leave it run long that way, but listened to it and didnt hear any knocking or anything like that so maybe i will get off easy with a plug change, and another oil change and be done. still very unhappy at the moment, but the sound of it trying to run, and having no telltale sounds of a horriably shot cylinder is a little sunshine at the end of the tunnel.

If there is that much gasoline in the oil like you indicate, I suggest you get in direct contact with whoever sold it to you and if you used a credit card to make payment, I'd inform the credit card company that you wish to cease payment for that charge, including the shipping.

That'll get the seller's attention.

I hope there is a simple explanation for all that gasoline in the oil, but I cannot imagine any reasonable innocuous way for it to get there.

the fuel will make all the orings and rubbers swell and weaken.

you will probably get leaks coming out in various places

i am going to get back ahold of the lace tomorrow and talk to the guy i actually was dealing with in the first place. i pulled the back plugwire off and tried starting it again, and no go. so i put that back on and took the front plug out. man that thing looked horriable. stuck it in the wire and started the bike again to see if it sparked and it did, but it surprised me in doing so because it was so black and fouled. since i had no new plugs at the moment i wire brushed it, checked it over and reinstalled. it fired up and was hitting on both cylinders at least, but popped and banged a few times. after smoking alittle and stumbling for a a minute or two as it warmed up, it started smoothing out and running better. throttle response quickened up a fair amount even. still not sure whats all going on with it, but atleast it runs and sounds fairly well. little different noises than my other xb but not horriable sounding ones. well thats the latest atleast on it. and as far as cancelling payment on it i am out of luck on that because of all the miss communication on the shipping of it. it has been about a month since i bought it, and i now just recieved it. so, i guess only time and more phone work will tell the story

Maybe some of the Waterloo boys will chime in, but if you continue having problems, I am sure that one of us that are sort of close would be willing to come out and take a look at the bike. I have a very difficult time understanding exactly how gas got into the oil (tank) of the bike, unless it was pumped directly into the swing arm. Just a question, but how do you know for sure it was gasoline in the oil?

Glad to hear the bike is running. It's a sure bet with any new 'used' bike to change fluids, plugs etc.

PM me if you need more help.

i never got to do anymore than look at the pics of it, because it was in new jersey and i bought it on ebay. it was actually at chapman ford lincoln mercury in bridgeton. it was recently purchased by the people that now own it, also the honda dealership across the street came with that purchase because it had all been the same previous owner. the previous owner had kept bikes over the years that had been traded in or what not for his own personal bikes if he liked them enough. this buell was one of the bikes he kept to ride. and since he sold the dealerships he no longer had room for all of those things so he was selling alot of them off. that is why the car part of the dealership had this bike, because they only wanted the car dealer and have now sold the honda shop seperatly

i am really hoping that this was an extreme cause of fouling a plug and trying to run it to get it cleaned out. i can say i have done that on other things before and it has worked good enough for it to start refiring on that cylinder. all the things i am finding (running on one cylinder since the first time i fired it, the extreme black fouled look of that nonrunning cylinder, and the fact that once i cleaned it up and reinstalled the plug it started consistantly running better the longer it ran) are leading me to that conclusion. i also checked the new oil after it had run for probably 10 to 15 min and it was still fairly thick (normal oil like) and did not have the extremely strong odor of gas like it did before. there is still a hint of gas in there, but that is to be expected i guess. that is why i only planned on flushing the system with the oil i just put in, because draining never gets it all out.

chapman motors is also seeming to be willing to deal with the problems, they have already offered to pay for the keys that were lost in shipping and all the oil and filters to do this. also, if i feel that after i flush it and run the bike for a bit, that there is some major problem with it, or that i am just unhappy enough with it that (as far as they are saying) they will refund all my money and have the bike shipped back to them. atleast that is better than i was expecting to hear.

i cant even take it for a good ride at the moment to really give it a test because we just got about 6 inches of snow the night i recieved the bike, and i dont have the actual keys to it so i cant get anymore fuel in the tank. hopefully the streets will clear up some by the time the new keys arrive and i can decide what to do

Bummer dude...Hope all works out. Just pray that the gas tank isn't full of oil when you get the key.

I remember when I got my 2004 XB12R (w/1300 miles) -which I also bought on ebay- that I smelled some gas in the oil when I got the bike home and gave it a more thorough going over. The bike had sat for a bit before I bought it.

I changed the oil out and have not had this since. I am careful to sniff the oil everytime I check it. Haven't had any real problems with the bike so I'm cautiously optimistic.
