I need to start putting together both a home tool kit and an emergency tool kit to carry on the bike. Does anybody have a list of all the tool sizes needed? I have a 2000 S3T. |

It'll be cheaper (for home) to buy a "set" each of metric and SAE tools; Buells have both (just to make it more fun). If you must limit yourself to a few, get 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8 wrenches, 10, 12, & 14mm wrenches. A 5/8 box will work on the spark plugs (there are "deep" box wrenches sold for that purpose). Also pick up a set of SAE Allen wrenches, and if you're feeling flush, the 8-in-1 screwdriver HD sells and includes in the toolkits on dressers; it has the common Torx sizes you'll need as well as common slotted and phillips screwdriver blades. A couple of sizes of adjustable wrenches are useful. Hmmmm. Add a tire pressure gauge and I've just described my on-bike tool kit. |

Out of curiousity, does anyone know the pattern of what's metric and what's SAE? Everytime I pull out the wrenches I tell myself I need to keep track of what I use when so I can figure it out. 3-4 months later I tell myself the same thing. |

Well brakes and suspension are metric. I was surprised that the hardware holding the seat lock on my X1 was metric too. The rear axle adjusters is inches as are the body panel screws. I think that the throttle body is metric too. |

most engine hardware is Sportster-derived, and is SAE, except the Keihin carb. Front brake is Performance Machine; SAE. Forks, White Power Products, metric. Rear brake, metric. Body and frame hardware is a mix. Outside-supplied parts and subassemblies are in whichever system is native; metric for Oriental and European, SAE for domestic. Other than that, it's seemingly random. |

Engine, tranny, drivetrain, header/muffler bracketry, frame/engine mating hdwr, swingarm, axles, luggage, shift linkage, rear shock mounting... SAE Forks, brakes, switchgear/hand controls, instrumentation... metric (Message edited by blake on November 29, 2005) |

rule of thumb that's worked for me engine/luggage = SAE all else = metric there are exceptions, of course (sheesh, we should finished metrification!), but that'll getcha in the ball park |
