With this American bull$hit... Trying to fix the leak at the oil pump (Right low side near filter) I broke the damn fitting. Just snapped it in half. So I try to get the broken piece out by drilling then using a bolt extractor. As the bitch starts turning the actual pump casing splits in two. So now I need an oil pump or if the bottom half of the pump is available I just need that part. The previous owner must have seen the leak and tightened it even more, cause it wouldn't budge at all. Buell needs to recall this crap!!!!! Sorry for the flame. I'll try to enjoy the bike when it's fixed. Can anyone find me a part #? I need one ASAP for my road trip. (Which probably wont happen) Isham |

might have a spare oil pump bottom end cap..... it would be at home. i will look tonight. it is off my sportster should fit the XB. the whole oil pump assembley is available, and not terribly expensive. if you are ham-fisted (sorry) or have a tendency to ignore incipient torque induced failure signs then having a lot of spare parts on hand may be a good idea. in the short term it may feel good to blame your broken PARTS on the manufacturer of the bike, but i think you may wish to take a step back from this viewpoint and realize that some other parties MAY have had something to do with what from your description sounds a lot like a torque induced failure. good luck with the repair. if you determine that my old sportster part will fit your XB i will be happy to send it for postage. probably only a couple bucks. |

Why would it be recalled if you broke it by applying too much torque? I spilled my ice cream cone and now I deserve free ice cream. |

No offense to Buell, I wouldn't trade this bike for anything, I'm completely in love with it and will ride it till it explodes on me...but if you would have seen the way this thing snapped off and the oil pump split in two you would be pissed as if it were made outa tin. Buell still needs to do a recall on the leaky oil lines....Cause its way too common and the bike only has 6k miles. |

Leaky oil lines? Man, I've got close to 40,000 miles on my bike, with no such problems. As with ANY use vehicle, one must go over it from one end to the other. Buyer beware when it comes to used motorcycles especially, they get beat to death and sold at the first sign of wear. Now take a deep breath and re-read Dean's post. From now on realize you're dealing with a mostly aluminum engine, an air cooled one at that. It'll never pay you to force anything. Take you time! Do you have a shop manual yet, great investment, and it sounds like it may save you a bit of money as well as time. |

Natex if the lines weren't leaking from the start I wouldnt have gotten this far and broken it. Like Ive read from similar threads that a little teflon tape would fix it. Thats something buell should have thought about before production. You probably didn't read about me having oil lines that leak, but it's ok. Fullpower if it's the right part and u can put that in an envelope that would be awesome. |

It would apear that Buell sells the oil pump as a complete assembley part # 26357-02A. from the pictures in the parts book, and on visual inspection, it seems that the bottom plate MAY interchange between th e1998 sportster and the XB. again, i offer my used sportster oil pump bottom plate to you, at the cost of postage. I wish to take this opportunity to alert you that many here have great enthusiasm for the Buell brand. many of us LIKE our motorcycles, and enjoy riding, maintaining, and even repairing them. a few of us are quite proud of the efforts at the factory, and are very pleased with the quality of manufacture of these bikes. i realize you are frustrated, upset, and your bike is not in running condition. i would like to ask you as nicely as i can to NOT needlessly spout off on such a generizied rant of Buell manufacturing quality, and further attempting to call into question my nations ability to build a quality product. you said "I broke the damn fitting" that is a quote. Isham, another thing you need to look out for... From what I understand you have a very modified bike, once you modify a bike as much as your's seems to be, Buell has no fault in it AT ALL. You ought to be pissed at the guy that built you bike, and that guy ain't Erik, he only started your Buell... |

C'mpn fullpower lay off him. He bought the bike, he has every right to gripe about something that erks him. I had a fitting that leaked because some lowlife at the factory tightened the fitting too tight and the oil pump cracked. Luckily the dealer I bought the bike from called around the Buell network and got me a new oil pump. This isn't the Stepford Buell's site. |

When I got back from the Dragon this summer, one of my oil lines was leaking. Enough to put a film on the top of the muffler. I was cursing them for a few hours while I worked on it...wish they had swivel joints of some kind instead of pipe threads. But a little teflon tape and lots of patience put it to bed. Kdan, it could be worse...you could have a TR8 :-). When I was about 16 I would have killed for a TR7. I haven't seen one in 20 years or more. Any pics? Sorry about the thread hijack. Bill |

According to the local H-D/Buell mechanics, they said do NOT use teflon TAPE. I didn't really get a good explanation from them as to why not. I used high performance Hylomar and an extra turn on the oil return fitting to fix my oil leak. The manual calls for Hylomar or teflon SEALANT, but doesn't offer a torque value for that fitting. I found this fitting to be very soft btw...probably to help prevent this exact error. Just thought I would interject. As a matter of fact... This was August in the 2005 TR7 enthusiast calendar. You may now resume ranting about oil lines. |

My dealer told me Buell is very good about warranty work. You might want to try and see if you can get it fixed under warranty. It's worth a shot |

First car: 1973 AMC Gremlin First street bike: 1968 Sportster I've had my share of troubles, the Gremlin gave me no trouble at all, people gave me trouble about the Gremlin. The Sportster was nothing but trouble, the trouble was me not knowing much about bikes at the time. |

I realized when I worked on it that teflon tape probably wasn't the best. I don't think it is called for on fittings that get a little hot. But it was all I had, and I wasn't going to wait until the next morning to get some of the red thread sealant. The teflon tape has held so far, a couple of months, a couple of thousand miles. I should add that just taking the line loose and tightening the fitting probably would have stopped the leak; the fitting was literally finger tight when I removed it. Glitch, what happened to the Gremlin? Did you trade it for a PACER? Bill (Message edited by xring on November 16, 2005) |

Warranty covered mine. The mechanic did use teflon tape on mine, too. As the matter of fact, he re-taped the oil pressure sensor, the return line fitting, and the feed line (to the oil cooler). I guess just to make very sure nothing else leak. I only have about 700 miles after the fix, but looking great so far. |

Glitch, what happened to the Gremlin? I bought a wrecked Javelin and took the 401 and did an engine swap for the 250. Wicked fast that car was! Did you trade it for a PACER? My Mom would NEVER get rid of her car. |

Problems, I'll tell you about problems. 1984 Porsche 928S. Bottomless money pit! Spent over $10,000 in repairs over two years. It felt so good to get rid of that thing, even though I lost a ton of money in the sale. At least it stopped the hurting... That was 8 years ago. The wife still reminds me about it. |
