Matty & Erik, sorry I'm late in posting congrats. But that is so awesome. Both Eriks Blast, and you Matty, too freakin cool. I just love those two action race shots, man thats sweet. I could frame that one above with the three Blasts in a corner. Matty, this is just the inspiration I need. I think I may soon make the transition from 4 wheel racing to two. Thanks Bobby! Matty and even James has much more experience than I do, but I would try to find who's racing and sponsoring Buells in your area. It will make it a little more accessible, fun and you'll hopefully find some competition. Maybe contact your local BRAG. Without the people here at BadWeb and Glendale HD/Buell, I wouldn't have known where to start. | ||

Bobby, I suggest looking into this orginization. http://marrc.nova.org/ They are in your area and should be able to give you ieda of what you will be getting into. Regional roadracing varies greatly from org to org, so they would be the best place to start. James | ||

Bobby, The main thing if you are getting started is to get some sort of on-track instruction. JUST doing a cheapie track day might not do much more for you than get you onto a track. Some of the better operators - like http://www.sportbiketracktime.com offer LOADS of on-track instruction. Ask the instructors to work with you in the afternoon (mornings they're more geared to first-time track experience) Full-on track schools like Freddie Spencer, Keith Code, Pridmore - are more pricey and well worth the money BUT if you go with somebody like Sportbike Track Time and USE the instruction that they offer, it'll put you a long ways down the road - and then start club racing and KEEP LEARNING and asking questions. After your first track day, they'll usually let you out without having to go to the novice school and if you ask the instructors to work with you on specifics, they're usually able to lead and follow you for a couple laps each session and meet with you in the pits afterwards. Get as much track/seat time as you can possibly afford. James is right, when it comes to racing, each organization does it a tad differently but there are more similarities than differences. CCS and WERA are the two big national organizations. AHRMA also has a good singles class but is not such a big organization. They all make you take a new racer school before competing as a novice (a GOOD idea - regardless of your previous experience) My own experience is that in Club racing (everything but AMA) - the classes that aren't filled with inline-fours - like singles and twins (and for me the old-guy classes too) are much more friendly with much more fun than the overcrowded conventional sportbike-based mobs. Spend some time hanging out at the local events, cruising the pits. Follow Erik and James as they start out racing and posting - you'll be getting some good insights into this silliness we've become addicted to. Check the race organizations, hang out on their discussion boards. Ask lots of questions. You will NOT hear the BS on a racing board that you do on a sportbike board (though us Buell racers DO get some still - but it is more good natured AND you can point them to this thread about WINNING on a Blast) http://www.ccsracing.com http://www.wera.com http://www.ahrma.org Welcome to the madness. | ||

Nice! Looks enough like a Blast to fool, but closer inspection reveals a little more! Looking at that fat rear tire still makes me wish there was decent 16" rubber available,say 140/60X16 (Pirelli). Then it would be just a matter of rim widening. | ||

Yeah, It's too wide really. I'd like a 160 on there, but the rim is too big. I'm using the XB bits is primarily due to costs. I already had the wheels - freebie! | ||

Matty: Question - I have a friend who is working up a Blast racer using an X1 frame - he will be using a chain drive - will he have to use an earlier tuber swing arm or does the X1 swing arm have enough clearance - or would an M2 swing arm work? PS - nice racer you got going there, best of luck with it! (note: you'll have to raise the ride height a bit to bring the handling back - experience noted from others who did the larger wheel & chain conversion) GT - JBOTDS! Good looking bike! give us some details... It looks like the Firebolt Front end bolts right on, and that the swingarm is a combination of an old tuber swingarm and a Blast swingarm. Looks like it sits much taller than a stock Blast too... I hope that you get it gone in time for this months races. If you need any help, let me know. James |
