Did he say anything about damage to the splines on the crank? |

No damage to anything at all. He went as far as taking out the clutch (and some other stuff) to find nothing wrong with anything he examined. |

I hope it's not a bent pushrod. Would tightening the compensator nut quiet down the knocking of a bent pushrod? (Message edited by dago on October 28, 2005) |

Track days bad? Why? Is the Buell engine a POS? Just asking. I don't pick my bike up for about a month. Hate to know that I can't take it to the track when I see all those BMWs out there. |

I've done a some years worth of track days on a tuber. No problems other than the kick stand grinding. Just one data point. Henrik |

Oh no...I was hoping we wouldn't have to cross this bridge yet. I can already feel the natives getting restless. At this current time, let's just say a nut has come loose and it needs to be tightened. I'm not going to think any further than that at this point. But I will post my outcome here. Stay tuned. |

It could be phantom noises as well... once you get it in your mind that you hear something "funny" it can really haunt you. God knows there is no shortage of noise naturally coming from a 45 degree aircooled pushrod twin to pick from, even when they are running perfectly... If the splines were fine, and it sounds like they were, and the noise is dramatically reduced, I would call it fixed and go ride the bike. (Message edited by reepicheep on October 28, 2005) |

One of the reasons I decided to get a Buell was the reccomendation of a friend who has owned a Buell and worked at a Harley/Buell dealer. He said the engines where "bulletproof" and instead of selling his Buell X1, he parted it out and kept the engine. He said, "it's the best thing about the bike". He was hoping to build a custom bike with it. |

tubers will nicely survive track daze, specially if ya trim the rubber kickstand bumber to about 1/4 inch -- XBs should do even better |

specially if ya trim the rubber kickstand bumper to about 1/4 inch Even that may not be enough ... it was a very scary moment, that convinced me that I needed a track bike. Henrik |

My 10 year old Ducati Monster managed to do just fine on the track. Managed to drag both knees and never touched so much as a peg down. Of course, my big butt hanging off the bike preserves LOTS of ground clearance. Guess I'm a lover of 2 valve air cooled lumps. (Message edited by chadhargis on October 28, 2005) |

i also had a metalic knock...not constant, but very noticeable and unnerving...thought it was the primary chain.( it wasnt) brought it in as i am under warranty, had 11k or so on the clock..they ended up tearing it apart and found the connectors (fly wheel to piston) loose...ended up with new pistons fly wheels..covered under warranty... havent really seen a repeat of my problem by anyone else here though.. |

oh man, i hope that's not my problem too. mine's out of warranty by about 3000 miles and 3 months. i just went to the Corinth H/D Buell dealership and spoke with their head Buell mech, Tripp. i've lost faith in my indy shop and feel the need to call in the big guns. there was a casual mention of them "handling it under warranty anyway" if the engine is toast. i sure how that's the case if it's something more than a loose nut. i don't drink the koolaide and know full well what my bike is and what it is not. but i expect it to last longer than 13k with or without track days. hopefully this will wind up being a very positive experience and i won't wind up sacborg'd. |

Whether or not you wind up enbittered with a negative attitude and full of hostility towards Buell motorcycles and those of us who enjoy them is pretty much entirely your choice. I have no doubt that you will avoid that pitfall. |

LOL...I knew that would get a response out of you. (I was being dramatic) My plan is to get her fixed (whatever that means), leave her on the public streets (for the most part) and buy a disposable track only bike (I can't seem to think of my XB as disposable). The only thing I can think of that would turn me hostile about the Buell brand is if Erik took an unprovoked swing at me and called my wife ugly. |

TRUST ME ON THIS!! From a guy who knows, the same thing happened to me. The same nut was loose, sounded like the motor was gonna come apart in seconds. I posted about it on American Thunderbike Club, my good buddy Dave Stueve told me what the problem was. He was right. Quite a bit of miles left and the noise is gone. Bike runs PERFECT!!! |

Norcal..yes, i have put almost 2k on since mid september when i got it back. it use to ping under hot weather, but here in chicago it aint that hot this time of year. since the new top end i have used very little oil in 2k...just the amount from top of the dip stick fill mark to the bottom mark. very happy and also happy with how ill harly has taken care of any issues i have had. |

I had that happen to my sportster. since that year model they have made the nut a right hand thread. I was on a ride at the time and it sounded like rods were gonna go flying! |

that same bike that I had that problem with had a leak between the engine case halves. I was well out of warranty and complained to Cust Svc (as recomended by the shop) and they fixed it free. That was a major tear down. I know the head mechanic there at AE (Gary) and have known him for a long time. He is "involved" in all the big stuff. You can feel confident that you will be in good hands there. He was also the head mechanic when they fixed my engine leak on the sporty. |

hmm, very interesting... 5K on my 12, she was running like a champ this AM when i set out for a 5hr ride... first stop about 100mi into the trip and i hear an evil knock at idle! tends to quiet a bit once moving but it was getting worse all day. sounded horrible, like it was gonna come apart. checking the primary tension tomorrow but i wonder if I've developed the same issue (?) its LOUD. could someone explain a loose primary 'knock' vs. the knock this loose nut will produce? she was finding neutral and shifting just fine all day so i'm thinking its not the primary tension but need to find out for sure tomorrow. bike isn't stored at home to play tonight. i was worried she wouldn't get me home today! |

Hey Reducati, How long did it take to do the repairs? From the first day you took it down there... Mine is going in this week for what is most likely the same as yours and am not looking forward to not having my bike that long... Firebolt withdrawls..... |

When it was loose on my Cyclone, there was a definite "ring" to the knock, and lightly loading the clutch would make it almost go away, even while the bike was not moving. |

Um... Read the whole thread, Spatten. I'm in no way bashing anything. I've done many track days, and mine is knocking. She's now in the loving hands of someone who knows what he's doing at a dealership with a stellar reputation. She'll be fixed properly whatever the outcome, and the sacborg'd comment was directed to Blake as a snide reference to what's going on that side of the Buell world. But that doesn't change the fact that I want a disposable track bike on which to learn, and I just don't think of my Buell as disposable. I want to treat her in such as way where she will last a good looooong time. |
