On my (now traded) '03 XB9R I found that the "two-dollar" ST4967-type knockoffs (Wal-Mart, Fram, etc.) had such poor threads I couldn't even get them to screw on properly. Bought a Mobil 1 M1-103 and it fit perfectly (for a few dollars more!) Just my $0.02... |

Back when the earth was flat (1960), there was an imported helmet called a "Kangel" It looked like some type of Hollywood space helmet and in only cost $9.95. The folks at "Bell" put out an ad stating, "If You Have a $10 Head buy a $10 helmet, If Your Head is Worth More Buy a Bell." I believe the same works here and so I use the Buell P/N and will replace that with the "Scott's" aircraft type at my next service. I think the bikes worth it. ... Terry PS the Scott's is available from American Sport Bike |

Buelldyno, Good point. However, I would bet that Buell does not manufacture their own oil filters. They most likely buy them from an oil filter manufacturer like Fram or K&N. Those manufacturers would charge an arm and a leg to retool just for a run of Buell filters. So, it is likely that they set aside a run of their stock filters that will be painted black for sale to Buell and other OEMs. If buying the Buell p/n at a premium gives you a warm fuzzy, I say go for it. I'm right there with you (have one on my bike), but I don't believe anyone else is risking anything by buying one of the other name brand filters. |

Just a quick search (using BadWeb's search function) There's tons of discussion about oil filters in the KV. Lots of cautions about oil filter by-pass valves. Check it out and make an informed choice. DAve |

Oil filter threads are like tire, oil, religion, or political threads. They go round and round and never arrive at a definitive end. Basically, an oil filter is pretty simple. Not much to it. Buy a quality brand, and you'll be in good shape. I plan on doing oil changes every 2500-3000 miles which will have me changing oil about 3 times a year. $30 for filters isn't a lot in a year. Now, during the break-in proceedure where I'll change it 3 times in 1000 miles..... |

Just wondering why you would change your filter 3 times in the breakin period? |

I plan on doing the Motoman break-in. I'll change it at the following intervals: 25-50 miles 500 miles 1000 miles Changing the oil frequently during break-in is more for "flushing" all the metal bits out of the engine than for lubrication. The oil will still look brand new, but I want to make sure I flush all that nasty stuff out of there. It's a small price to pay as I won't be using super premium synthetic oil or anything. Just regular old $1.50 a quart stuff until I get 3000 miles on 'er. |
