Why would one brake pad on the front be TOTALLY worn down while the other still has the grooves??? Is this normal?? Is there something I should check?? Just put in new pads...first time since I have owned it (April)...it only has about 5500 miles. Just concerned that the pads weren't worn equally... | ||

I've heard of this type of thing on the rear since it's the crude "whole caliper gets dragged around" kind. The front? no I haven't seen that. Mine wear evenly. | ||

Someone else posted a question about it not to long ago about an M2 I think. I'd say abby-normal. I'd check the non-wearing side for piston movement and ensure it's all free of crud. Maybe a good op to bleed 'em-run some new fluid. DAve | ||

Dave is correct! You have one side not working properly. Not sure from your info above, did you mean 5500 on the new pads or on the bike... either case, that's a bit too soon for a set of pads unless you really ride/brake hard. You should pull the caliper and disassemble for a closer look. It's easy to do and the parts are cheap for a rebuild. Make sure you are using the correct fluid for yor year. Some use Dot 4, some Dot 5, DO NOT MIX THEM!!!! Let us know what you find. Brad (Message edited by bluzm2 on October 28, 2005) | ||

'02's have DOT 4 fluid. Check the caliper as Brad said. I rebuilt my caliper when I replaced the rotor with an EBC a year ago, for good measure. Todd | ||

OK...I have next week off, so I will attempt to rebuild the caliper. As for the miles it is both (I think) The bike has 5500 on it, I have only owned it for the last 1500 (bought it in April)...I assume th brake pads are original... So do I need to order a rebuild kit from Daves?? | ||

Jason, Yup! But,Dave's off till next week. Might need to try on of our other sponsers if yuo can't get it locally. Although I'm sure someone at Appleton could help you in Dave's absence. You do have the service manual right? A parts blow out may be of help too. I could scan the brake page for you if you need it. It would be from a M2 but the calipers are the same. I wouldn't bother rebuilding it right away. Try taking the caliper off the carrier and take the pads out. play "whack a mole" with the six pistons and blast it with brake cleaner. | ||

When I changed the pads...I pushed the pistons all the way back in...I cleaned it with a towel (wiped off crusty stuff. Didn't shoot it with cleaner. Went ahead and ordered the kit from Daves...that way I have something to do when the weather goes bad... Bluz...Thanks. (Message edited by Essthreetee on October 29, 2005) | ||

Use the cleaner before the pistons get pushed into calipers. Use swabs and get them very clean then you won't experience sticking pistons. | ||

S3: Al has the kit, as does Daves. you might want to be careful as to whats in the aerosol break cleaner, just did the brakes on front and had sticky pistons, did what you have done did not help much, overhauled the brake caliper and broke down the front MC for a look and cleaning new fluid bleeding was a mess other wise simple, heres a thread http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=3842&post=534665#POST 534665 | ||

Just put new pads on mine. Blew the crud off, gently pushed the old pads back,pulled the pin and dropped in the new pads. Easiest I've ever done. |
