J Have you had the chance to ride both? That would be the first step in deciding. The R is more aggressive riding position The SCG has a lower seat height Similar but very different bikes. Second step would be me asking if you'd like to make a trip to Wisconsin? |

jbuell, welcome, might help if you tell people what kind of riding style you prefer in st. louis - those 2 bikes are basically similar mechanically; but, ergonomically different. the xb12scg seat is lower than the xb12r (28.6 vs 30.5'') and has a more upright riding position - xb12r handlebars are lower and more forward for a more racing prone riding position. opinions vary about long ride comfort. the scg also has alittle less ground clearance and suspension travel unlike the r. |

I love my Scg because it has a very comfortable riding position - and if I want to get aggressive I can, but for riding to and from work it is just perfect! It wouldn't be the best choice for 8 hour rides on the freeway (no windshield) but it is fabulous around town and for the twisty highway. |

This is sort of an apples and oranges thing, with a tangerine tossed in, if one can mix metaphors:-) Besides the adventure sport Ulysses, all XB model Buells are one of two types: 1. Lightning or "S" models: upright seating position, standard handlebars,no windscreen, lower pegs. 2. Firebolt: aggressive sport riding position, low bars, racing windscreen, higher foot pegs. The Lightning, ( which I happen to own), is great for every day riding, commuting, and riding around town. In addition, you can ride it pretty damn fast on the track or on the twisties once you get the hang of it. The Firebolt is a more sporting proposition, more of a racing seating position, and is great for the guy who does lots of track days, and lives where he has access to lots of twisty roads. The position is just a bit to extreme for old timers like myself. The 12 Scg is just a lower version of the Lightning, designed for the vertically challenged. It allows those with a short inseam to get their feet on the ground due to the lower seat height which is accomplished by providing a lower seat, and reducing the suspension height, ( and ground clearance as a result). So.................. If you think the standard seat height of 30.5 inches is too high, your choice is simple: get the XB12Scg with its 28.5 inch seat height. If you do not need a lower bike, then you must decided between the more sporty "R" models, the Firebolts, or the "streetfighter" Lightning "S" models. Here is the good news: you just can't go wrong with either one, and once you have bought one, you can easily modify the bars, seats and suspension to get it just right for your size and riding style. Got it?

I've been on both the S models and the R, and I bought the R. I had a Yamaha before my Buell and it seemed like an easier transition to me. As for the Scg, like someone said above that is the lower model. If you need that get it and you can change it to an R if you want to. If you don't need the lower bike you might look at an S instead of the Scg for the more upright model. |

Like Daves says,s ride 'em both. I've ridden the Firebolt, the Lightning, and the Lightning Low. Odd, but I preferred the regular height Lightning--odd because I'm 5'4" tall with a 28" inseam, but then again I've never owned a bike I could flatfoot, and see no reason to do so (flatfoot, that is). I bought the R, even though the S model is a bit more comfy--the Firebolt just "speaks" to me more, and besides, almost all of my riding is done on twisty mountain highways... One question--have you considered the "9" models at all, or are you stuck on the "12?" |

I have a 9s and I wanted a 9R, but after looking for a while I found my 9s and I love it. I first test rode a 9s low model and hated it didnt fit me at all. But the normal size lightning is fine, hell I own one now. I really like the race kit and exhaust on it, it's like a different bike after I opened it up. Maybee 1050 kit this winter |
