So I have a yellow XB9S and I really dont like yellow! I got a great deal on the bike so i couldnt pass it up, reguardless of the color. So now Im looking for someone that can paint my 3 plastic pieces for me, and since I want them black or gun metal color, they have to be just about perfect, as black shows all imperfections. Thanks guys |

Depending upon the cost for painting you might consider getting new black plastic...on the S model there are only three pieces right (Air Box Cover, Fly Screen, Chin Spoiler)? Checking with Daves (he is a sponsor on Badweb)...might not be as expensive as you think. |

Is that the cost of new plastics or to paint? |

Pretty sure that is plastics...those numbers look familiar as Daves has noted them in the past. Another thing to consider with paint is maintenance if scratches occur. Painting on plastic is somewhat specialized as the prep work and materials are a bit different...just my two cents. |

I was thinking that very thing... i wondered how well paint would stick if someone just slapped a coat on there. Hince why I want to find someone that will do a good job, or just buy new plastic |

Look on ebay! You can probably find them one at a time or as a set. Keep the prices for new plastics in mind so you don't get ripped off. Either that or buy the new black plastics and sell your yellow ones on ebay. |

yea, i looked around, didnt find a whole lot. Emailed Dave about some tho. I would rather paint them as its prob cheaper, but if i have to ill get new ones. I also wish my frame was the darker color, but oh well. Im going for this whole dark stealthy look. I saw another bike like it, and LOVED it |

If you search for my post you can see my pics and stuff from when I painted my frame and swingarm black on my 12R. It wasn't bad at all. You just have to take your time taping and spray it on in light even coats. |

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/126854.html?1121831532 That is the post from my swingarm and frame painting this summer. The first couple pics suck because I used my phone, but the rest are from my digital camera. |

This winter I'm going to trade primary covers with a guy that is making a Buell chopper using a Lightning motor. He wants to paint the bike white, and I'm sure that the mag covers will be easier to paint over than the black ones. Plus it gives me some more black on my bike. I'm also getting a custom paint job and dipping my wheels. My goal is to look as far from factory as possible! |

I used engine block paint out of a rattle can believe it or not. The reason I used block paint is because of its' resistance to temperature. With the oil cycling through the swingarm and the enging just below the frame I wasn't sure if normal paint would hold up. It is a semi-gloss black Check that thread that I posted up above the pics. It has pictures of the process. (Message edited by Olinxb12r on October 20, 2005) |

Thanks! I'm pretty proud of it. If you want me to do it it'll cost ya! It really isn't that bad to do though. I started that project when I dropped out my clutch doing rolling burnouts. I worked on it a couple hours at a time for about 2 weeks and it was done. I could do it a lot faster now. The main thing is to clean and tape everything really well and then clean it again after taping. I used preps all for the cleaning and normal old painters tape. It would be a really good winter project for anyone with a garage and some extra time. I'm not sure how many hours I have in the paint, but I know it was a lot less than polishing everything, and there is virtually no upkeep on it since it is black! |

Black plastics, sand / glassbead blasted for a flat-black look. Wonder how that'd look... |

Buell_892, there's no problem to paint those plastic. If it is prepared correctly, there's no problem at all. You can also get something special to make your bike personalized to your own taste. Here's my bike:

Stou do you do anything special for paint prep or just the usual sand/scuff, clean, primer, paint? Thanks Mark |

I used a matte clear made for plastics over the stock black. |

Stou, I don't believe I've seen a pic where I can see the flames licking off the "Buell" insignia of your tank before - that is just beyond words. I've got to get around to sending a windscreen up to you. PM me your thoughts ($) on doing some flames to an R windscreen - I'll provide the screen. |

Madsx, water sand it with 600 grit paper, apply an adhesion promoter like Dupont 222, used good quality cathalized primer, base coat and clear. |

It's yer bike Stou, but "I" don't think that it could look any better than now. I think you'd be risking having done too much and spoiled it... |
