mikej: Yes, it is the orange one, I thought about it for 3 days and decided to go with an "empty canvas". that S1 is pretty nice too. I am going to order that exhaust, BTW. |

If it hadn't snowed today I would have rode my bike down to Hal's tomorrow to let you hear what the exhaust sounds like. I need to get it to the car wash and spray off the oil before I replace the front rocker gasket. Then next weekend I'm finally going to tear it partly down and do some wiring and stuff. Maybe the roads will clear up enough tomorrow so that you'll get to warm up your new bike a bit. |

A follow-up on my request for help a few days ago : San Jose HD/Buell which was supposed to have a X1 race header ready on the shelf doesn't have it anymore indeed. So I'm still looking around. Buell races are still happening so I suppose that the race header can be purchased somewhere (well, not in France...) ! So please, if you happen to hear from your favorite dealer that he has one, just send me an e-mail and I'll do the rest. Another question : I've not heard much about the Scorpion muffler. Anyone having experience or opinion about this exhaust ? I was told that it's a bit quieter than most of the aftermarket exhausts for Buell, with still a good boost of torque at low and mid-range. |

Jerome; I talked to my dealer in Topeka and the Race system they had in stock was recently sold. It turns out that was a pre-99 system (rear pipe runs outside the frame) so would not have been what you need. They say it is not in the parts books any longer, and it is one of those things that probably could be found if a person had the proper contact within the factory. Is there anyone here who fits that description? |

Tripper : thanks a bunch for having checked that for me. The race header was in the 2000 Buell accessories catalog but I don't know about the 2001. I would find strange that they don't produce or sell it anymore or that would mean that Buell races will be stopped soon or later... I've inquired directly to Deanne Matthews at the factory (only by e-mail though) but didn't succeed in getting an answer so far. Maybe it is because they would not consider anymore selling the header separately from the race muffler... Which is recalled. |

Jerome, There are better systems out there than just the Buell factory system, and by no means will racing stop because the factory stopped producing the race system. The race system is good, but don't consider it your only option. Force products and now Borla both have good full systems, and some dyno information shows that bikes with the Daytona Boss 3" race-only muffler with the stock header actually outperforms the Buell race systems. Just a thought. -Justin |

Justin : interesting thoughts. The reason for my "focus" on the race header is that I own already a SuperTrapp IDS, which fits straight to the race header. And the Trapp is tuneable for sound and power. The Boss 3" or the Force and Borla will probably be too loud for my personal taste and they are not tuneable. The race header has the big advantage over stock to increase the length of the connection tube between the two headers and the muffler, therefore increasing torque at low and mid-range. And this is what I am looking for first. But that baby seems really hard to find somewhere on this planet... If I don't succeed, I'll try another combination of muffler with the stock header. A Wileyco or a Scorpion maybe. The Scorpion is said to give excellent boost of torque and be quieter than a V&H for instance (because it is slightly longer). |

Apologize : I meant that the race header increases the length of the two header collectors (by 8 or 10") before they get together in the connection tube... The connection tube is slightly shorter or comparable to the stock one. |

Jerome, Isn't the header made by WestTek very much like the Buell Race Header? Why couldn't you see if that's available without their muffler? Just a thought. later, jiml |

Jiml : I didn't think about the West Tek, thanks for the reminder... I've just had a look at their small web page. The header closely resembles the race header, you are correct. Except that the one shown on picture is bent such that the rear collector goes over the frame tube, not below it as on the lastest race header. I'm a bit concerned about heat then... Apart from that, it seems to have a comparable collector length with the race one. Anyone here having good or bad experience with the West Tek ? What about the machining of flanges ? Is it a kind of mandrel-formed end like on the race header or is it different ? I'll get in touch with West Tek to see if separate order of the header is possible. On their web site they show a dyno run with the West Tek header and SuperTrapp, so I suppose that fitting one to the other will be straightfoward. |

I bought a 00 M2 last fall. This is a great bike. I intend to replace the muffler and gut the air box before spring. I plan to use a K&N and I am considering a supertrapp. I am interested to know if anyone has used this setup and if so, where should I expect the jetting to end up. My goal is to improve the anemic sound and improve the torque in the 2000 – 4000 rpm range. I still need to be able to sneak out of my neighborhood at 5:30 am without irritating the state trooper that lives two houses down. If anyone has a better suggestion than supertrapp I would be interested in hearing that. Thanks, Jerry |

Jerome, I'm just guessing but I would assume that the picture of the header shown would be for the pre-99 models. ASB sells WestTek exhaust and lists them for 99's and up also. Let us know what you find out from them. later, jiml |

Jerome: Good luck contacting WesTek. I have tried repeatedly and left several messages never to have been called back. A while back Tat had a unit from his bike he was selling. I passed on it, I didn't like the price for it being that is was a used part. I have a pre 99 that my friend slid on. The bend and collector are good. I had planned on splicing the tubes of one of my early headers in order to have the rear pipe further away from my leg but never got around it. Perhaps you could do the same if you could get to a tube expander and welding. Jose |

Jml, I have a '00 M2 w/a Buell race aircleaner and Vance and Hines, but most aftermarket pipes seem to respond well to a 45 low speed jet and a 195 or 200 main. Run your idle mixtire screw out about 2 or 3 turns from seated. I have a Yost pwer tube in my CV, and ended up going back to a 42 low speed due to increased atomization, the 45 was drowning it! I recommend the Yost highly, it really improved my throttle response and midrange very noticeably, well worth 90 bucks. Look under carberation on this site for more info, I've also heard that completely gutting the airbox hurts power, but everyone I ride with has aftermarket aircleaners, so I can't say from my own experience. My bike will walk away from every Buell I've lined up with so far, and I weigh 200 lbs. Oh, I have Andrews N6 cams, too, but the jetting info should apply as further jetting after camming proved fruitless, and I ended up back with 3 turns, a 42 w/ the yost and 200 main. I'm at sea level. Have fun! Ray |

Jerome: Contact TAT at ASB for advice on WestTek. This is really a single man operation and not very good at answering phones. He makes a GREAT pipe for pre-99 Buells but I am not so sure about the inside the frame bikes. He responds to Tat so let him do your communicating. You won't pay any more than going direct. I went to the WestTek office yesterday to discuss your needs but he wasn't at his desk again. |

WestTek, Yeah, Tim is hard to get ahold of. He does make great stuff, but doesn't seem to do much flow/scavaging/dyno testing. What he did for the pre-99s was copy the racekit & make it fit correctly every time. I've spoke with him several times regarding the post99 headers & while he claimed to be working on a new header placing the o2 sensor in the collector (and thus requiring a heated sensor) he hasn't made any to sell. He does take your existing header & modify the collector to match the post99 race kit header for about $300 (this was before the race kit was shipping). Also, Battle2Win posted seperate part#s for the post99 race kit incl. header so it was avail. at one point. See my website for pics of the WestTek muffler setup for the post99. Josh 99 S3T |

Thanks guys for the recommendation. I've been in touch with TAT at ASB (nice man, what a speedy reply to my e-mail...) and he'll check for me about the availability of a post-99 West Tek header. So there's hope on that side... In the mean time and as usual, if you happen to hear that your favorite dealer has the reference 65400-99Y (X1/S3 race header) in the back of the store, just drop me a line and you'll get a free subscription to Cafe-Racer, the best bimonthly magazine on V-Twins in France ! :-) |

Supertrapp in stall on my '00 X1: Well, I'm still not happy with how it's mounted (pardon?!). The front strap isn't tight at all on the header. I'll have to call Supertrapp to se what's going on. |

Josh, I've done a "Copernic" multi-search-engine search of KenW... Couldn't find him/it. Is it the boss name of an official dealer ? Which dealer ? Drandall : I have a Trapp on my Buell and I had no big problem with mounting it, except that the small plate linking the front strap to the mounting rubber bushing should be in the inner side of both the strap and the bushing, not on the outer side as specified by SuperTrapp in their notice. I also had to slightly modify the angle of one of the two arms of the front strap, to be able to push the screw through it. Hope this helps. |

I'm working on correcting a chronic mount-breaking problem on one of my Supertrapp-equipped '96 S1's. So far, I've made a new rear mounting strap (the piece that encircles the rear end of the can) out of 3/4" x 1/8" steel strap, then hung that assembly from the "Y" bracket with a piece of automotive exhaust pipe hanger strap (that heavy rubberized stuff that looks like the sole off a huarache sandal). The front mount (on the elbow) is trashed and I'm at a loss as to how to fix that part. Any suggestions? |

Road King : go for a strap as well for the front mount. It is the solution used by SuperTrapp on the muffler that they sell now and it gives the kind of "free-play" that the Buell vibrations need. Better than a welded stuff... You then link the strap to the bushing with a small metal plate. Tripper : thanks for the link. I'd love to have the same tool... Checking on-line the dealer's inventory with my PC... :-) |

Drandall : if you can move the strap by hand after screwing everything, it's not normal and that means that SuperTrapp provided you with a bad strap. There's "free-play" and "free-play"... |

My '00 M2 just got delivered yesterday, woo-hoo! Sad that it must sit for two months(Hal's treats their customers very well, BTW). Rumor was that there is a 2 to 3 month wait on the Wileyco pipe. Shop say 2 weeks max. My 2 cents on Kerker products:I put a set of Kerker pipes and headers on my ex Yamaha TDM 850, the pipes were pretty expensive but NOTHING fit correctly. The cans didn't even fit into the pipes which came with the kit. I was mad as a hornet trying to everything together and had to constantly tighten stuff up. Others may have a different experience, but that's mine. |

Seance, congratulations. In Europe we have also the Yamaha TRX 850. Same engine as the TDM but little bit souped up and in a sportier Ducati like tube frame. Nice bike also. Hans. |

Does anyone know if the force-winder intake system fits on an S2T with the lower fairings on? How about the force-winder without the carbon fiber cover? I'd be interested in people's experience with the force-winder on the S3T, too. |

Hans: TRX 850 is pretty cool, I wish they sold those here! The TRX engine fires @ 270 degrees instead of 360 like the '92 TDM. The new TDM's in Europe fire the @ 270, more character. I have some Japanese magazines which test the TRX against Ducati. I don't know the verdict since I can't read Japanese! That has been a popular race engine in Japan. Over Racing make very nice pipes for those, but they are super expensive. |
