Just wondering if anyone has used this, if so, how hard is it to put on and what were your results?

Do it yourself and save some money. Become one with the DREMEL.

Buy the 12 box lid first, then a K&N if you dont have a free flow exhaust. IF you have a drummer or D&D or such, eliminate the lid with American Sport Bike's kit or your own. Results-crisper throttle response, great intake noise as the cover becomes a echo chamber.

Just my experiences, I have a D&D, American Sport Bike airbox eliminator, TFI, de-snorkled, dyno tuned, air box cover vented, K&N, works EXCELLENT!

The kit was $56 and easy as pie to install and my butt dyno said it improved my midrange grunt significantly. Or, like they said, you could buy a 12 box for $35 and get a Dremel, (which I'd like to borrow when you're done with it please) and cut your own. I didn't have a dremel, so I went the cheap route.

What do you have to cut.. with the 12 lid you just replace the 9 lid and, bam, your done right? That was my undertstanding

To cut your own is very easy. I bought a 12" threaded rod, 6 nuts and washers. Cut out only the top portion of the 12r lid, drilled 2 holes in the cut out (top) piece, 2 in the base, cut the threaded rod in 2. Then nut and bolted it together. sounds more complicated than it is, very easy and takes no time at all. Bought the hardware for $6 and had all the tools already.

buell_892. If you get the 12 lid it takes the place of the 9 lid, a direct replacement not mods. When you cut/modify the 12 lid it is for an open element filter.

I cut away everything except the top portion on my 12 airbox...but I didn't use any bolts to hold it down. I used two of those "figure 8" sponges from a hardware store in the painting area for cleaning surfaces...one of them was left as is except for a slit to accept the hose. The other was rounded a bit to fit the underside curvature of the airbox cover (what you see). Then I simply put them on top of what was left of the airbox and push down on it to bolt the airbox cover in place...hasn't moved from what I can tell and is pretty cheap at about $1.50 for each foam piece.

I did the exact same thing as Buellin_ri. With the see through outer box on the City X it looks sweet. Should have come that way from the factory...and, if you'll notice the 2006 City's have slits in the inner box cover to expose the filter. Similar, but different, ya know?

If you are referring to the snorkelectomy, the top portion is used to make somewhat of a seal between the lower airbox and the frame itself. I think some people were getting air whistling through there. Or something like that.

Did you have this problem, or have you even changed/cut your lid yet?

I cut my snorkel down because it looked cleaner than just an open hole. My 12 air box (that comes on the CityX) is intact as of right now but it might become victim to the new Dremmel I got for my birthday.

If you look there is a base where the air filter goes. Then there is a larger base to include the snorkel (on the left side of pic above) with a groove in it...the shape is similar to the "gas tank" (what is normally the gas tank on most bikes...actually called the Air Box Cover). Normally with OEM there would be a smaller "gas tank" under the one you see...you would not see the air filter, the hose, or snorkel inlet...it would all be covered up...this would be the Air Box.

If you look at the Air Box Cover, there is a small gap all the way around...by opening up the Air Box so that it can get air all the way around the filter instead of just the snorkel inlet...more air can get to the motor...and faster. This is what makes for better performance.

However if you are running stock exhaust...it is likely that it is holding the motor back from pulling as much air as it wants...what goes in has to go out. That is why the combo of a more open inlet along with a better flowing exhaust makes such a difference.

Kind of like breathing through a straw versus a wide open mouth...

Once you get the outer cover off there is an inner cover that holds the filter in place. It follows the perimeter of the bottom plate(lower air box) you see here on the frame. Here it is gone . Instead there is only a plate holding the filter down. You'll see once ya open it up.

Good analogy! Ultimately I guess it is like breathing in one straw, holding your breath for a moment, then blowing out a second straw.

So while the stock exhaust will definitely hold a system back, the fact that the downstroke of the piston encounters less resistance as it sucks air and fuel into the cylinder *will* make a difference.

Though ultimately, the thing I like having gone back to a stock exhaust and cut inner airbox is that cool angry snorting honk from the intake when I open up the throttle. Just like the forcewinder on my old Cyclone. Music to my ears, makes me smile just thinking about it : )

True...I didn't mention the reduced resistance internally...figured that would be part of the "surprise" when all is said and done with the first twist of the throttle...; )

Is it necessary to do any additional work after cutting the stock airbox? What are the breather hoses that I have heard mentioned? Do they need to be re-routed? Thanks in advance.

Some people reroute the hoses to try and ingest less spooge, but having done that on my Cyclone, it was nothing but trouble. On the XB, I just left them be.

Under 3000 RPM, the ECM learns the new setup. Above that, you go into an open loop preprogrammed mode, so you might be running a shade lean, but probably not a lot.

Isn't the new 2006 Airbox pretty well cut up right out of the box? I hope so, I just ordered one. Pics on Buell.com, you can see it thru the City X airbox cover.
