My understanding is the VOES is an on/off switch which is closed and retards the stock ignition under low vacuum conditions, like when you wack the throttle open, to prevent detonation. The switch is opened when vacuum is higher allowing the the ignition to return to its more advanced stock timing. My question is on carb'd Buells, do all after-market ignitions utilize the VOES, and do they use it the same way? Thanks, Tim | ||

the few after market ignitions that I've looked at has the VOES as optinal. a quote from Crane- above 3-5 in HG, the voes closes and grounds the vacuum input. This increases the total advacne generarted . Vacuum advance improves part throttle driveability and fuel econmy. a quote from twin tec- The vacuum switch (VOES) is normally open. At low manifold pressure (or manifold vacuum greater than about 5 inch-Hg), the VOES grounds the purple/white wire and causes the Twin Tec module to generate additional timing advance. Refer to the Tech FAQ on our website for more VOES information. The use of a VOES is highly recommended. Additional advance under low manifold pressure conditions improves idle stability and fuel economy. Most 1980 and later motorcycles are equipped with a OE VOES. If your motorcycle did not include an OE VOES, we recommend that you install H-DÆÊ VOES P/N 26566-91 or an equivalent aftermarket part. The green VOES LED illuminates whenever the VOES input is active (timing advanced). a voes switch also helps with pinging on quick take off by advancing the timing sooner. | ||

Tim; The VOES is adjustable as well. There is a little rubber plug you can dig out which gives you access to the adjustment screw, with which you can either confirm factory settings, or adjust to a custom setting if you have that info. There is a section in the Buell maintenance manual giving the correct spec for your bike. |
