Any honda or toyota product and you will be fine. I've got a 91 Acura Integra with 175K on it and still runs like a champ! 30mpg with a modest foot weight. |

any volvo 4-cyl and you'll see half a million miles with precious little maintenance. even the continental timing belts will go for over 200,000 in those simple mills. all the metal walls of the engine, trans, etc., are about four-five times thicker than those of japanese engines, and made of superior metals., hence easy, warp-free warmups and cooldowns, in all temps....little component wear...etc.... |

My 94 Cavalier gets 30.5 average with bad head gaskets. (low of 26 some and a high of 34 some on last trip.) (Had to check numbers.) (Message edited by Doughnut on October 12, 2005) |

Got my neighbor a 1 year old Riders Edge Blast and a rain suit for 2k. 65+ mpg and a lot less maintenance, and a 2 year factory warranty as well. Should have bought the second one they had, it had higher mileage -900. His had less than 500 miles (had been dropped more times though). Tough to beat. Best of all, now he's Buellin' too. |

tramp -- good point, bud -- I'd spaced that fact -- thanks fer setting the record straight -- back when I was the resident Volvo caregiver in my motorpool, junqed Volvos were pretty thin on the ground, as folks tended to have em rebuilt again and again (sorta like yer granddad's ax -- three handles replaced, two heads, but it's grandad's ax, alright!) since that was long ago (I beleive the whigs were in the white house at the time), I'm sure the situation has altered for the better |

One thing to keep in mind with the suggestion of the Saturns...If the alternator on the older Saturns goes out...you have to pull the wheel to replace it. Its on the backside of the motor down by the chassis brace. Its not an easy backyard fix. Basically, any 4 cylinder base model from the top names will yeild you a good commuter car. Honda, Toyota,Mazda,Nissan will yeild your reliable beaters, GM,Ford,Chrysler will give you well, Mazdas, Mitsubishis, Suzukis and Isuzus... |

1990 Acura Integra...picked it up for 3k because it was in excellent shape with only 38k miles on it. Gets about 35mpg if you don't drive 80mph everywhere. But yeah, those old Hondas last forever and get great mileage. Dfishman...that bike is pretty sweet! I want one! |
