Just got a new buell XB9S not long ago, I hate the mirrors and a few other things (tail piece). Any good ideas and places I can get some better looking pieces for the bike to make it special. Any other part ideas too (edit) Crash cage too?! (Message edited by buell_892 on October 12, 2005) |

No problem Alex...This is the way most of us learned as well...the airbox cover is under the plastic where a traditional fuel tank would be...The airbox lid from the 12's was designed differently and better and will fit the 9 as well..the snorkel is a rubber fitting that is inside the air intake that runs through the frame on the left side of the bike. You will see the air scoop just below the frame. When you have the plastic off the bike you can see the rubber tube..grab it and yank it out! Without it you will allow more air to get in. If you don't want to buy a new 12 airbox you can drill a bunch of holes in the 9 airbox..Go to the knowledge Vault area on this site and do a search for both of these topics and you will be able to find a lot of info and pics. Almost forgot also do a search for the cheese grater (tail peace) to see how a lot of guys grind them down. Click on my name to see my profile and how I did mine. Larry |

Yes you can tell a difference and also it's a little louder...I would do the exhaust first!!!! These bikes sound great with a loud exhaust...they sound like a sewing machine with the stock cans... |

Hahaha, we are like Im'ing right now... anyway... what pipe is good... cost... I have found a solution for the tail piece. So you say i should buy a 12 air box huh? Other cheap mods that give good power or anything of the sort |

There are a lot of different pipes out. I only have personal experience with Drummers, the stock can, the Buell race can, and the Jardine...all ranging from 300 to 600...I personally prefer the stock can with a little modifying..(you need a welder) that a few of my friends and myself run. |

The addition of a Drummer, K&N, and race ECM will bring it alive. It will be a different bike entirely and you won't regret the money you spent. You can hack at the muffler yourself, but you aren't going to come close to a Drummer's performance gains. |

to get the outer airbox cover off: 1) remove the front seat (2 t27 torx screw hold it down. they are located under the rear corners of the seat) 2) remove the outer airbox cover (4 t27 torx screws hold it on) from there you should see the 6(?) plastic latches that hold the inner airbox cover on. unlatch them and the snorkel is on the left (clutch) side passing through the frame. just pull it out. I highly recommend that you get a factory service manual. the companion parts manual is also a good idea. |

I agree with jerseyguy. Either a factory race pipe, or a drummer, the race ecm, k&n type air filter, xb12 inner airbox cover and snorkel removal is the best relatively low dollar set-up. That is where almost everyone here started with their own bikes. However I also recommend that you look at your tires before you spend money on a pipe. The stock dunlops are well documented as being absolute Sh**. A set of pirelli, michelin , or metzler tires would be a wise choice if it hasn't been done for you already by the previous owner. The tires are still stock, as I am the first owner and the bike only has about 1200 miles on it. Im just looking for a bit more power... as we all are... what other power options are there.. without going too over board? |

things start getting expensive from there. A power commander can help squeeze a little more out of your bike. The TFI has fallen out of favor. Big bore kits and stroker kits are popular. Cams are another source of power I don't see too much discussion of around here. NHRS, Revolution, Hal's Performance advantage, etc will have plenty of options for other mods. Hope this helps. |

brian he has an S model. seat is removed by unlocking the latch on left side of bike with the ignition key. the outer airbox cover is retained by 4 stainless T-27 torx scres, the tool for removal should be under the seat. the inner airbox cover from an XB12 can be exchanged for the the XB9 part, allows better airflow. supposed to be well worth the 36 bucks or so. strongly suggest that you obtain the factory service manual. enjoy the ride. dean |

also agree with the earlier post : the stock rubeer is pretty sad, the best thing is that it goes away quick, so you can have some Pirelli Scorpion Syncs on hand, ready to mount. |
