My '06 XB12Ss won't roll up in first gear to save my life. Does the longer wheel base cause this or did I get a weak engine? Anyone else who owns a 12Ss have any input?

I'm not sure how the long version is, but my 12R will wheely no problem. I can power it up in 1st without trying and in 2nd standing. 3rd is no problem with the clutch and now I'm working on 4th. Do you have experience on other bikes? I hate to say it, but it is probably you because that is the conclusion that has been made every time that someone says their XB won't pick up the front tire. Goose it harder or try it with the clutch, it will come up.

I have an XB9S and an M2 that is slightly modified. The 9 will come up with a little creative clutching in first, but then the 9 doesn't have near the torque of the 12. You are on about the longer wheelbase making power wheelies a bit more difficult. The 12Ss has about the same wheelbase as my M2. I can however pull power wheelies in first with the greatest of ease. Try shifting your weight rearward to power wheelie. That will change the moment arm pivot point and make getting the front end up much easier.

Find your nice stretch of long, flat, pig-free road and do the following: First gear, roll up to 3-4K rpm, slam the throttle shut and then whack it back open. Front end should pop up like adolescent d*cks in strip clubs. Be careful not to open it back up to full throttle lock, you may loop it. If this doesn't work, then your bike is a not a Buell.

It should come up in 1st gear definately by whacking the thottle open and with a tug on the bars.

Its not gonna wheelie like an R1 in the first 4 gears, but then it doesn`t have 160 rwhp.

I have the Ss too, and it is definitely not going to loop on us without trying. The 2 inches makes a big difference, not to mention the possibility of a little extra fuel weight up front. I've got mine to come up, but not just rolling on. Had to basically do what Nasty said...was about 3500, closed, opened hard, and VOILA! Also pops very easily during a powershift to second, but again, never any major air. BTW, my bike has KN, and spec ops muffler, stock ecm. I'm 6' around 195-200 suited, so it's not the doughnuts either...

The Uly I rode, same wheelbase would easily wheelie in first gear. It was all stock.
2nd gear with a little clutch and it would stand straight up.

I have ridden a 12S and it came up in first and second no problem. Later I bought a 12R and I have to bounce it up in first to get it to come up. I have to clutch it in second. I always thought it was the different ergos on the R that made it harder to get up.

My 12Ss with Drummer SS, K&N and race ECM wheelies effortlessly from 2k RPM on up. It comes up so fast if I nail it too hard its scary. The stock Uly I tested at Liberty HD wheelied in first even though it was pinging like crazy.
Under 2K RPM I have to stand up and tug on the bars to get the Ss to stand up. Even though its in that "chug" RPM zone it will still do it.

I have a 9S. 1st gear wheelies are simple but after that...nothing.

Rev it to about 6-6500 rpm, shift(quickly) into 2nd and pin it. Don't flip it cause it will if you let it.

FZ, find a hill with a nice little crest... say @ 3-4000 rpm, set your weight back in the seat, crack the throttle and, tug on the bars... good luck.

I found that the Uly I test rode didn't want to do any "advertent" wheelies like my Ducati Monster does, but cresting a hill I got the front end up without trying. (yeah right! LOL!)

Daves - Damn son, You dump the clutch at 6k on a 12? I don't have the balls (yet). Dumping it at 4-5K on my old 9 would do it. I'm still learning how the 12Ss reacts.

I've got a couple of little iron bridges near my house. The ones that go over creeks and were probably made in the 30's. They drop off real fast. If I roll it on in second going off of them, the 12 will do a massive wheelie and scare the hell out of me.

Oh, I forgot, not that I would ever wheelie on the street.....

I have no problem with my 9 and I'm over 200lbs...the 12 is got to be a breeze! Definately stuntin' 101.

All wheelies I have done have been in a controlled environment under the supervision of professionals ; )

O.K., let's clarify something here......I don't have a problem making the front end come up. The problem is that it won't "roll" up in first under its own power without use of the clutch. And, no, this is not my first semester in "internet stunt riding school". Fact is, I really could care less about stunt riding. I would, however, like to know if my bike should roll up in first by simply twisting the throttle....hence the reason I asked if anyone else with an XB12Ss could provide any input.

I have not done any on a 12Ss(except Cochise's, shhhhhhh don't tell)

No, really I didn't

I have done them on a Uly so I don't see why it would be a problem on the Ss.

I think we were a little harsh with you.
Sorry.

If you whack the gas on any Buell in first gear it should flip over backwards.
Maybe something isn't right with your bike?

I also have a new Ss and here is my limited experience with it. When it was bone stock the front end only came up when I banged second hard, caught me by surprise because it never felt like it even lightened the front end on hard acceleration. When I put the race kit on it that has all changed. Now when it approaches redline in first it power wheelies every time. It does the same, to a lesser degree, in second as well.

I weigh about 215 and I have set-up the suspension to my weight by the specs in the owners manual.

I wouldn’t call the Ss a wheelie machine by any stretch of the imagination, and I don’t think that there is anything wrong with your bike based on your description. A 2” longer swingarm can have a very significant effect on leverage, at least it always has in my experience on high performance ATV’s. When I used to build and drag race quads it was common for the higher horsepower motors to make the bike almost un-rideable, wanting to loop on launch and every gear change. The fix… put a 2” longer swingarm on, problem solved.

I don't doubt that for a minute. If I read BN's latest post correctly he wanted to know about the ability of the bike to "roll on power wheelie" and I took that to mean pull the front end up without shocking the drivetrain as you would by closing and whacking the throttle, basically the same effect as clutching.

I have 5 buddies that all have buells, 9s and 12s, all with race kits. All of them are very experienced and I have yet to seem them or myself be able to do a "roll on" in any gear, at any elevation, no matter where any of us sit on the bike. I think the buells just dont have the balls. my buddy has a cbr600 and that will do roll ons, no clutchin', no choppin the throttle, just straight balls to the wall wheelies. I wish my buell would do that in any gear but no luck and seeing as how its not just me I am goin to say that its the bike and believe that a buell will do a roll on when I see it. I would like to see a video clip posted of someone doing one if people say it can be done, it would definitely change my view of buells. Dont get my wrong I wouldnt have anything else but I wish it had a little more balls.
