Either "1" or "4" can signify built in the U.S.. As for the "B9" vs. the "MZ", perhaps the NTSB decided Buell had to change it's manufacturers designation due to the fact that too many companies already shared the B character. Like I said (  ) mine IS a California model, it does have the "56" in the vin, and my S2 Service manual indeed lists said vin variance for California models. My signature series # designates it as such with the "CA" prefix, right on the timing cover. I have the original finance paperwork, sale receipt from the Bay Area dealer from whom it was purchased. The other obvious giveaway, jim, would be the run sum # listed on your timing cover. if it says 36/36, then it's the last of the 36 california examples manufactured in that model year. mine is # 3 of 36. If it's 36/2,174, then it's not a California version. we have to take into account the Cal. number variable when catalogueing these scoots, regardless. Incidentally, when My S2T was purple, my riding associates called it my "Barney Bike", my work associates "The 'Prince' Bike".....feel the love, beavis..... | ||

Clutch issue: turned out both bearings warranted replacement (big surprise- they weren't done when plates were last changed), but the big ugly was that the pressure plate and the clutch hub were both worn down considerably, so there's an ugly lip along their surfaces. Now- a buddy did the job for me (guy who I used to be a partner with me on my shop), as he figured it was just as easy, with the scoot being there, for him to put her up on the lift and change out the clutch. He also wanted to do it because he did the clutch for me the last time (Only component on my scoot that someone else did, outside of recalls), being his best friend fried my clutch back then, and he was helping us both out. anyway....the friction and steel plates all looked within wear limits, it's shifting really badly right now, and I seem to recall, 6 years ago when my buddy replaced the plates last time, that there may have been a discrepancy in the number of plates he dropped back in. So I'm likely going to pull the clutch pack again, this week, or ask him to, and count the plates. We sh*tcanned the spring (stuffer) plate and replaced same with 3 plates that Buellistic aka LaFayette sent me, gratis, but I think there may be a total plate deficit. My buddy did the job whilst I was up in a Black Walnut Tree, so I'm not sure of the count. I thought I'd posted these results, but I may have posted them only on Americanthunderbike.org, the sister site where I spend half of my online buelling time....makes me forghet what I posted where, and like many cyberbuellers, I find both sites FAR too valuable to remove one from my favourites menu.... absolutely. black walnuts have a lot to do with why my mom's side of the family came to this area. the folks at steinway pianos paid handsomely for them, they'd lug 'em back to astoria and put them on a huge luan-lathe that looked like a gyro-rotisserie and make huge sheets of black walnut for their grand pianos. | ||

Sportyeirc, So you don't think everyone is ignoring you and to answer your question directed towards me (even though it has been somewhat answered):  Bomber, You are correct sir! I hadn't actually thought of putting a prize on it (especially since the answer is already there in black and white), but I will see if I can find a unique keychain or other Buell artifact in my collection of things Buell for you. Only problem is you will have to wait until Homecoming for me to deliver it. Just think of it as something to look forward to. I guess what everyone is trying to allude to is the following (your help is needed to fill in the blanks): 1995 - S2 49 State total production 1399 - S2 CA total production 86 1996 - S2 49 state total production ___? - S2 CA total production ___? - S2-T 49 state total production 398 - S2-T CA total production 36 I believe that with the resources of this board (A.K.A. members & S2 owners) we should be able to piece together these numbers so the next time someone who asks how many S2's were made we can reply with a sly grin and respond with 'What flavor of S2 are you referring to, oh young Bueller?' According to my Ca Signature Series plate, I have 95 CA S2 # 34 / 86 - except that the bike is a 96! Jim (jim_sb) recently sold me this gem and has a story about the 95 / 96 debacle. With that, I wonder if 1313's number above for 95 CA S2's is really correct - since it matches my allegedly 96 model's total number produced. What did I just say? -Saro | ||

I really don't have a problem with those who want to build/ride choppers, I just don't get what makes the tubers appealing. You can buy/build better engines, frames are everywhere, they sell off the body parts and often the wheels, so we're left with the forks? I'm going to pose the question to one of the ebayers soon, just trying to figure out how to word the question politely. | ||

Easy there Jersey, Buells have a "mystique" about them in the Chopper realm, if we work it right our unwanted or extra Buells might be able to be brought up to Sportster prices and demand.  And S2's are not hard to find. At any given time there is one to be found for sale, and several more just waiting in the background for an acceptable price/offer.  Problem is, the market price on used 'tubers is below parting-out value. Don't matter though, mine is just fine sitting there in the garage waiting for some upgrades/repairs/mods/time. two words -- cheap oops, that's one word -- tubers are fairly common in the market, with low percieved value, so folks can pick em up for a song -- Adam Smith rocks, don't he? although, I did notice at the crud run, the MaDeuece was generating more questions than the brand-spanky new XB series scoots right next to it . . . "Izzat a Buell? never seen one like THAT before? Izzit new?" chuckle | ||

When the mutant phase runs its course there will be another fad to fill its place. The less tubers there are the more the remaining ones will bring.Haveing worked at a bike shop people see the mutant as a way to make a chopper. The famous phrase," All I have to do is get a cheap buell and buy a mutant frame and I can build me a chopper. Just like those guys on TV." economics 101 and perceived economics 101 As a community of Buellers we tend to know and recognize certain things. The inherent and emotional value of a S2 or S1. Market value is another chapter. A mutant builder may or may not know or even care. They have a shopping list and purchase to that end. It just so happens that shopping list is easiest and cheapest to fill with the donor. Just wait till all those mutants show up on ebay and sell for far less that built for. I will be in the line to get one. Just to put another S1 back on the road. What do you think the Mutant community will be saying. "you don't need to rape a rare machine for a throwaway bike!!" I find it ironic for someone to come here asking for a cheap buell, looking to build a mutant out of it. Maybe there is a mutant board we can go to asking for a mutant donor(on the cheap)to rebuild a Buell. |
