Hello everyone. Yes, another new guy. I have been scavenging info here for some time now and I figure I'd post when I had something worthy of posting. I just installed the xb9 primary sprocket and chain in the ole 12. What a huge difference it makes, acceleration is amazing and first gear wheelies have become scary. I installed this setup in an effort to achieve 2nd gear power wheelies. My efforts were futile but I like the gains. Does the intermittent power pulses of the 45 degree twin prevent easy power wheelies? I know in flat track the twins are king because the rear tire has a chance to gain traction in between the engine power pulses. Can any of you guys shed some light on this. |

How much did your crusing RPMs change? |

My cruise rpm went about 400 rpm across the board. I really don't mind that since I don't do much extended highway riding. |

Your bike will do power wheelies in 2nd. I have a 12r with stock gears and I can do it. Put your left foot on the back peg and bounce it up. You should probably use the clutch anyway. You have a lot more control with a clutched wheely, and now that you have those gears I bet you can clutch 4th with your left foot back. I tried it the other day on mine and the front comes up, but I can't quite get it to the balance point yet. |

Thanks James. I am going to put the passenger pegs back on and give it a try. Is this the technique for a stand up or sit down? I havn't tried standups yet. |

You will be standing. It will feel really strange the first couple times, but you will really like it once you get used to it. Try to work on pulling in the clutch with only two fingers so that you don't loose your grip. |

Tell me James, at what rpm do you normally dump the clutch at? |

I like to bring the bike up to about 3K. That seems to be a spot where the bike has enough power to bring the front up fast while still having enough rpms left to ride the wheely out. Try clutching it sitting down in first to get used to it. After that try it standing up and just continue to try something new once you feel like you have mastered what you are trying. You just have to do it until you feel comfortable. Start slow and work your way up. When I first got my bike I couldn't clutch 2nd gear and now 2nd is like 1st to me. I really like riding wheelies in 3rd on the XB. You also know to cover your rear brake with your right foot while you are standing right? That way if you scare yourself you can tap the brake and bring the bike back down. Like I said, it feels strange at first, but the first time you use the break to stop the bike from looping you will understand. Did you have to change to the a different belt to do your gear convertion? |

sounds like fun. find yourself hitting the rev limiter a lot more now? |

I think he changed the primary drive gears and chain, not the final (belt) drive. So the belt would be the same. |

I see what you are talking about. I was thinking of the wrong stuff all together. Thanks for the clarification Brian. |

I bring my 12 up in second gear at about 2k, much longer wheelies that way. Oh yeah and I am sitting the whole time, bring it to 11:30 and lean to the side to see!!! Lots of fun. |

Yes Fullpower, the rev limiter comes on really fast now it is rather annoying. I guess I just have to get use to the quicker spool ups and buy a shift light. I always cover the brake when I wheelie. It's just standups are new to me. The gear swap was done so I could wheelie without the clutching. The clutching just sounds like a lot of wear and tear on my beloved bike. I was kind of disappointed when it wouldn't power wheelie but impressed with the acceleration. I also did an elapsed time dyno today at my dealer. Max speed plumeted to 119.5mph |

lean on back and stay below the rev limiter my 9 will climb right up in 2nd i always found myself leaning forword self preservation i guess, i thought the 12 with all that low end should be easy to 2nd wheelie |

It will wheelie easily in second just not on power alone. It has to be clutched up |

LOWGEAR, I believe that you live in my neck of the woods. I live in Albany, GA, but my girlfriend lives in Phenix City and I spend every weekend there. There aren't many Buellers around there and there will be even fewer since Chatahoochee H-D quit on Buell. Good to see there is someone who has good taste so close by. Lets ride! |

so.....along these same lines...... has anybody tried putting the 12's primary gears into a 9 ???? seems like that might give the 9 a bit better cruising top end.... anybody? thx bob |

For info sake, the 12's primary ratio is 1.5 to 1. The 9's ratio is 1.68 to 1. 883 XL's also use the 1.68 to 1. I will be installing the 1.68 gear and chain in my M2 in about a week. Should make 2nd gear power wheelies rather easy as I already have trouble keeping the front wheel on the ground.

Quick shifts into second at the right RPM and slamming the gas to the stops has my 12r in a good long wheelie most of the time. The trick is to feed it/reduce throttle gradually on the xb once it's up-it doesn't respond like a dirt bike. The best wheelies are usually on a smooth straight road and when I get a good steady throttle setting, then 50+ yards is easy... |

has anybody tried putting the 12's primary gears into a 9 ???? seems like that might give the 9 a bit better cruising top end.... Yes someone did with detrimental effect to the rideability. The 9 just doesn't have the low end to keep the fun factor with that gearing. If all you did was ride freeway, then it might be worth it, but the bike really bogs down in the lower RPM ranges. |

I did it, I can't tell you, though, how that mod works by itself as I changed the rear pulleys as well(taller also), nor with a stock motor... I guess what I am saying, is just that I did it. |

Ya I have seen Sams 9 do 75mph power wheelies without the clucth. That's right it is an XB9R. |
