Ed, Also glad to hear you are OK. Although I was in my Civic when it happened, I was rear-ended on the Saw Mill Parkway when all traffic stopped and this girl did not. She hit me at around 55mph to avoid hitting "the other car". My car was totalled by her ins co, I was fairly sore, got from No-Fault: a couple months of chiropractic, a week off from work, $8K for the car (fixed for under $4K), an MRI, x-rays and finally $6K for my injuries. Nothing out of pocket. I did not use a lawyer, just common sense. Rack up the medical bills, take your time to heal, see a chiropractor, and after a couple of months, settle. I had almost ridden my bike to work that day too. Good luck, and recover... | ||

Got caught with my pants down... I left the Central Valley headed for the Bay Area this morning, going over to the International Motorcycle Show. A buddy and I were on hwy 84, just on the east side of Niles Canyon. There's a three way stop there that was very busy this morning. As I pulled away from the stop and accelerated through the intersection the back end stepped waaayyy out, real quick. I was thinking of other things and it caught me by surprise. I've slid the back of this bike around alot and it's very predictable, but this was different. Well, before I could get mentally caught up the rear hooked back up and I high-sided. (wow... I can see my house from up here...) I landed very heavily on my head then rolled onto my back. I jumped right up and got the bike out of the road, but it did ring my bell a bit. A lady in the minivan that was directly across from me stopped to see if I was ok, and somebody else brought me the parts of my Shoei RF-800 that I left in the intersection. The bike went down on it's right side with following damage: Mount bolt for right footpeg snapped off, slightly bent rear brake push rod, scuffed Buell race C.F. airbox, scuffed headers, right bar end mirror, slight damage to front brake lever, possible slightly bent handlebars. My riding buddy took the peg/brake lever off the pushrod and I went to shake it off and see what happened. Well, there in the middle of the intersection, in the shade of the trees was a big patch of very fine gravel. I never saw it. I guess a came off the stop and already had the power down when I hit it. It was a simple matter of not paying close enough attention. If I had been more observant I would have seen the gravel, or failing that made better corrections. There is a slight turn to the intersection, since the roads aren't aligned straight, so that didn't help. As it was when it came around I feel I was slow to respond, I ended up running off the gravel onto clean pavement about the time I was rolling out of the gas. As crossed up as I was it was instant highside city. My neck is stiff and sore, and it seems I somehow sprained my right ankle pretty bad. Guess I'll go see the chiropractor tomorrow. The helmet is toast, but my Vanson jacket came through in good shape. The bike road fine about 50 miles to home, I just had to use the the passenger peg for my right foot. CRASHING SUCKS! We have all been behind the slow driver that is driving below the posted limit. One day in Modesto I was going to an appointment and was running a little late. I had my 10 year old step daughter on the back, and I was riding a 76 BMW R100RS. As I came up on the aforementioned slower traffic on a two lane road, I became frustrated and decided to pass, even though it was a solid double yellow line. As I passed, and was even with the front tire of the car, the driver suddenly turned left, right into me. No signal what so ever. Somehow I ended up on the sidewalk, on my back, with the forks resting on my head. I remember thinking, what a strange dream this is, I'll just go back to sleep. Then suddenly I realized this was no dream and my step daughter was on the back of the bike when this happened. I got a big shot of adrenaline and shoved the bike away from me. As I did this, I noticed my stepdaughter trying to drag the bike off me by herself! The end result was, my daughter was okay, without a scratch, and aside from some cracked ribs and being generally beat up, I was okay. I later was sued by the female driver of the car who was claining injuries (I bounced off her front tire) and her husband who claimed she could not fulfill her duties as a wife (no sex). I believe my insurance company settled out of court. Now when I feel myself getting impatient with slow traffic, and I get that urge to make a quick pass in less than perfect circumstances, I always remember that crash and I calm down and wait. Ed, Dude, VERY sorry to hear about your crash. I hope you doing alright. Drop me a line. The X1 and I had a disagreement with gravity on the 3rd (11/3). I forgot that I am old and the ground is hard. Ed, Glad to hear you weren't hurt bad. Early in my cycling career I had a similar experience. I was sitting at a red light in the right lane. I just happened to look in my mirror and saw a car barrelling down on me oblivious to the red light. I did a quick right turn in between cars just as the guy locked up the brakes. He skidded right up to the intersection so he would have pushed me into the cross traffic. I have now learned, and am teaching my kids, to always check the mirrors when stopping or stopped. Ed, Yeah on cutting off the jacket I can relate. I also ride dirt bikes and a couple of years ago I crashed and broke my collar bone. I loaded up the bike and drove home to the ER becuase it didn't hurt too bad. When the nurse pulled out the scissors to cut off my nice jacket and jersey I said "no way, it doesn't hurt bad enough to ruin my good clothes!" He said that he didn't care so I raised my arms to have him pull (both pull-overs) off the stuff. Man did that hurt! After that I am not so sure I would have worried about the clothes. IA Mike | ||

So..... I was driving down the Stadhouderskade, along one of the big city-surrounding canals in am*dam. It's below zero here, so the road is being salted and thus a bit damp. Traffic-lights, I stop and manoeuver my way through the waiting cars to be the first leaving as I always do, to have a clear road ahead of u. Light turns green, I pull off, easily, remember I picked the bike up last saturday, so I am breaking in the engine... Anyway, while going I look left, ahead, right, ahead again and suddenly there's this car in front of me, blocking the way, which had been parked alongside the road, pulled away and tried to make a quick u-turn, then sees me, too late, panics, stops, I try to steer around him, too late, start skidding the front wheel, go down and in/under the car.... BLACK..... Next thing I remember is sitting down at the side of the road, female (I only found out after I called her today...) officer talking to me.... BLACK.... Next one I remember talking to me is the paramedic, who puts a neck collar and a leg brace on as I complain about pain in the neck and the knee.... FUZZY.... in the ambulance, sirens, paramedic talking to me gently... FUZZY.... In the hospital I am being examined, knee inspected, only some rash, head and functions inspected, no damage, just a serious concussion. 15 minutes later I'm dismissed and I'm standing on the street with my undamaged Fuyrigan Buell jacket, crushed brand new CRAFT RX5 helmet, (thank God I bought a new one last saturday!!!) And home u go my boy! Sheeeit!!!!!!! Head is still fuzzy, but I am fine, taking into consideration what the bike looks like... I just saw it at the salvage yard, geeezz, I think it's close to total. Front wheel damaged, fender broken, front fork must be bent, front engine mount went into the oil filter and came out again, tank, bikini mask and rear fender badly scratched, handlebars and handles gone, banke shifter ruined and so on. I think the frame is f.u.b.a.r. as the front mount is so badly bent, same goes for front fork and steering head. Ah well, everything is replaceable, I wanna keep this baby! Just hope the engine is undamaged, we'll see when it's transported to my great dealer, West Coast Motors in Alkmaar. Probably not the fastest dealer around, but they do a great job! I'll keep you guys posted later on, right now I'm going to bed again... Hein, Glad that you're up and about. The only good thing to come out of this is the free beer you'll be able to get. You're another example of why we "Dress for the wreck, not the ride." But if my memories of several trips through A-town in the winter are correct you would have been wearing leather anyway -- nasty damp wind you've got. Glad you're on the way to a full recovery. A friend and Orlando Bueller was hit by a truck on Sunday. Brian Gardner aka Buckinfubba@hotmail.com was seriously hurt in a hit and run by a truck. Ruptured spleen, torn ligaments arms and legs. The idiot left him unconscious and fled. He was caught a short distance away when he stopped to check the damage on his truck, and it got stuck. Brian's parents flew down from Indiana to be with him. Brian is a student at MMI here in Orlando. His M2 is his only transport. His friends here led by Preston thndrb@msn.com and Randy would like to pay his deductible and help as we can. When we first started riding with Brian he did not wear a lid. Our poking fun and giving him •••• made him get a big arai for his big head. Without it I don't think he would have survived. All help for Brian is most appreciated..if we each help a little it will be a lot. | ||
