hi everybody, i own a 98 S3 with 700 miles on it and just changed the tires on it(i needed stickier pirelli's). the mounting shop didn't put any balancing weights on them because they said the rims balanced out. when i drove the bike over 85 mph it started to shake/get instable/ move a little from one side to the other real fast (the faster i go the worse it gets, especially over 105 mph). therefore, i went back to the store and told them to finish what they started. when i picked up the rims again they mounted 1/4 ounce balancing weights but had trouble fitting the rear wheel (PM) on their machine, so i had to take the belt pulley off. even though our bikes aren't racing bikes, they should be capable of going 140 mph without stability problems or not? however, the bike still shakes over 85 mph. if i don't mount the tire 100% straight, could this vibration be a result of it? i did my best in measuring the distance on both sides, so that it sits straight. any ideas what else could cause this problem? the bearings are good. thanks a lot smiler51 |

Does the shop specialize in high-speed M/C tires? Back 5 years or so, most automotive shops only spin-balanced up to 65 MPH. So, if you went 75 you were on your own. How fast did the mounting shop spin them? |

no, they don't have a high-speed balancer. however, they do all kinds of balancing for suzuki's, yamaha's, etc. i don't know of any shops in my area (clearwater, florida) that have a machine like that. i think they all spin at around 25 mph for bikes. smiler51 |

I was at the AMA superbike races the other day, and stopped at the dunlop tent. None of the tires were being hi-speed balanced. They just put them vertically in a cradle and added weights until the tire stopped finding the low point. Looked too simple. Those tires were running 170 down the back straight. |

i only static balance my tires, i know the honda's race team used to static balance theirs too. i static balance them with the pulleys and rotors on, they have to spin too. its easy enough to do and dosent cost that much to get stuff to do it your self. ive had too many bad experiences with having shops touch my bikes, i mount and balance my own now, that way im the only one to blame. |

Sorry, not relevant to your question in the least, but "a 98 S3 with 700 miles on it"? |

used to go to great effort to static balance the spotsters wheels, till i weighed them: rear wheel, with brake rotor and tire 42 pounds. dont consider a an ounce or two to matter. Buell wheels are a bunch lighter, but mine seem to be doing well without weights. |
