If I picked up one of those spring loaded belt tensioners from HBM and used a larger front pulley... Would I be able to use the Ulysses/SS belt to attain a taller gear ratio?

Interesting idea Don...I'll be keeping an eye on the thread to see the outcome.

Makes sense to me.

I guess you'd have to find the difference in length between the "long" belt and the standard belt as well as the amount of travel offered by the spring loaded tensioner. The only potential problem I see would be that the larger front pulley and the spring loaded tensioner might not be enough to take all the slack out of the long belt.

Best of luck.

Seems doubtful to me, based on some very rough math. First, a two tooth change on a front pulley is very significant. Can't imaging going for more than 3 teeth more. So lets assume that you do 3 teeth larger. At a 14mm tooth pitch, that adds 42mm of belt length, which is about 1.7" or so

The Uly and Lightning long swingarms are, I believe, 2.5" longer than the regular XB arms. Since a belt has to get there and back, that is about 5" of belt length. Since belt length can only be added in 14mm increments, that is 9-11 teeth more on the belt (gimme a break, I'm doing the math in my head before morning coffee!). That spring loaded pulley can't possibly take up more than 1 or 2 teeth worth of slack, but you'll have 7 extra teeth worth to deal with.

All this without even considering how much space there is for the front pulley extra diameter. I haven't even looked at that.

I'm betting that this woun't be possible.

I wonder how much travel the spring loaded tensioner allows? If it's not able to take up excess slack from the long belt, maybe it has enough travel to make room for the stock belt to go around the slightly larger pulley.

Another option would be to slot the mounting holes for the idler pulley to allow it to move a bit. The risk there would be upsetting the geometry of the stock setup that allows constant tension through the range of the suspension travel.

Oops...

I was just looking for this thread to see if I got any hits and realized I put it in the wrong section...

My bad...

What about also using an XB9 rear pulley? Are they larger too? I'm really just looking for something to get a little more speed for track use once I put some work into the engine. I don't plan on doing this any time soon...

I suppose I could just go to a chain... But I don't want to. I like my belt.

The rear pulleys are no different. Same final drive on 9s and 12's. The difference is in the primary, 34 vs 38 tooth front sprocket at the flywheel output.
