only to recover moments later. After about 45 minutes of street riding my bike lost power after 10 minutes on the highway. The engine was running but the clutch started slipping while doing a mellow 5th gear roll-on at about 60-65 mph. I pulled in my clutch and revved my engine once to make sure it sounded OK and disengaged the clutch. Now at about 50 mph 5th gear does the same thing. It was like I had no clutch. I down shifted into 4th, 3rd and 2nd with the same result as I decellerated. I pulled onto the shoulder and sat for a moment with the bike in N. After a minute or less I tried to start out in first and still nothing. I sat for a while longer while I pondered my situation and then tried again. This time it ran perfectly. WTF? I got off the highway and took the back roads home, the whole time the bike ran fine except for two small backfires on acceleration from two stop lights right after I got off the highway. I was really babying it for once so maybe the ECM didn't know what to make of that: )
Either way, I got home and let it sit for 10 minutes before I put it up on the stand and checked the tranny fluid that I just changed to Mobil 1 75/90 gear oil from M1 20W50 V-twin. I tried maybe too hard not to overfill it; the teeth of my spring diaphram were just barely touching. I decided to add another ounce or two to make it look more like the diagram in the service manual. I went inside to read up on clutch cable adjustment and I am going to attempt that tomorrow AM.
What else could have caused this? My bike is an 04 with a little under 7000 miles. Could my clutch be bad already?
Thanks for looking,
WT

Well, that went poorly. When I got to the part where you turn the clutch adjusting screw counterclockwise until it lightly bottoms, mine didn't lightly bottom on anything, it just kept turning clockwise. Now I can't get the clutch to disengage at all no matter how much I play with it. Am I doing something wrong or is my ramp and ball/adjustment assembly damaged? And now, I must sleep.
Thanks again,
WT

Are the threads stripped on that little post you are turning?

I am not sure about the XB's, but I think on my tuber I could get that whole assembly out right through the derby cover, I did not even have to pull the primary.

I doubt any of those parts are terribly expensive or hard to replace.

Did you turn it COUNTER CLOCK? or CLOCK? It will not bottom if you turn it clockwise. I ask this because you stated: "it just kept turning clockwise." If the screw is recessed into the plate, then it is way too loose are not screwed into the threads. Remember, It's Lefty-tighty in this case. Good luck dude.

I meant counter clock wise, sorry about that. It gave me a little resistence, but it didn't "bottom out" on anything...it would have dropped out into my hand if I kept turning. By the time I was done "fixing it" The clutch was no longer disengaging at all. Well, I had it towed to the dealer this AM (AAA rocks!)and they said they would look at it on Tuesday. Thanks for the responses and I'll repost when I find out what broke.
Thanks again,
WT

Sounds like the ramp balls may have fallen out while you were fixing it?

Stevem123, the retaining clip was intact and the balls stayed put. I'm still looking at the service diagrams and I can't figure out why this would have happened.
