But I just picked my bike up from its 5th warranty repair in 6 months (voltage regulator) and before I got it home the speedo sensor went out. So back to the shop it goes after only having it an hour. Is anyone at BMC reading this? This is my 4th electrical problem (3 of them in the last 4 weeks)

Sounds like you have a legit complaint. I wonder if BMC does read this website - if I owned (managed) a m/c firm, I would either view the main forums myself or pay someone to do so...

well I just called my service people here in SC and I was able to resolve the issue over the phone. Seems the sensor is known to pick debris from the transmission which causes it to stop working. 10 minutes and an allen wrench and I was able to remove, clean and replace the sensor. It seems to be working fine now.

Good to hear it's fixed. Man, you luck though seems to be running bad right now.

BTW, how about everything else that you were having trouble with. All fixed now?

Can you elaborate on that process a bit more? My speedo didnt work on startup the other day. Rode to gas up and when i started her back up all was fine.

Good luck with your bike. Sounds like a short in the harness maybe? Electrical issues are usually hard to find but easy fixes. Well, most of the time.

Everything seems to be going well now. The voltage regulator was fixed under warrany and the bike is running fine. Im keeping my fingers crossed.

To check the sensor, go to the right side of the bike, take the front pully cover off. Next to the starter there is a small black plate that has a wire going to it. The wire on mine was looped into a "U" shape. This plate is held on by 1 allen screw. Remove that screw, pull up on the sensor plate (I was told NOT to pull it by the wire) and the whole sensor assmbly should come out. I just wiped mine off with a clean paper towel and reinstalled it. It worked fine after that. make sure you dont leave any debris from the towel on the sensor.

sounds like a reasonable PM tip, wipe speedo sensor off with cotton towel each 10,000 miles.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but all the pre XB's, and the early XB9R's, had unregulated power to the speedo sensors. Failures were chronic. Typically, your speedo would just stop working. Occasionally, fuses would blow and bikes would stall.

The accumulated metal on the sensor *can* cause it to stop reading correctly also, so I am not ruling that out.

I forget which fuse blows, but disconnecting the speedo sensor might not be a bad diagnostic step in cases where the right fuse has a chronic problem.

OK I was stranded yet again today. This makes the 3rd time in 4 weeks. Same issue as before. I was out running some errands and the check engine light came on. Then the bike started to sputter and surge, then it died. I got it restarted but couldnt keep it running for long and it died again. Tried to get someone to give me a jump but the bike wouldnt run more that a minute. Going to pick it up now and try to start it to see if the charging circuit is working. I dont think my XB is ever going to run.

It sounds like somebody needs to properly diagnose the electrical problem(s) with your bike, and that this has not happened yet.

I am not saying diagnosing all electrical issues is easy, they can be really nasty and dealer tech's have my sympathy, but it sounds like you have a problem that has not been fully identified and fixed.

Just an idea, but maybe see if the dealer can take your wiring harness and replace it along with the ECM just to see if that solves it.

I agree with Reep. Electrical issues are a royal pain to diagnose.

Well it is back at the shop again. So I am without my bike again, probably for at least a week. So no riding for me and it looks like my trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains is definitely off. Oh well there is always next summer. At this point I think I am done With Buells and BMC. I have contacted the Buell Customer Service 3 times. Once by snail mail and twice by phone. I have yet to get any reply from them as to if or how they are going to help me get my problems resolved. I see a Euro twin in my future (Beemer, Guzzi, Duc) Maybe someone with some other twins can tell me what they like or dont like about them.

I am very sorry about your Buell customer service experience. If i did not have so much fun on my XB, I would be riding a Ducati monster, "The other aircooled v-twin"
I really think your motorcycle problem is very minor, and has not been properly diagnosed. i understand you are very frustrated, a bit upset, and that you have a very nice motorcycle that you find completely un reliable.
Please, if I may request, consider the problem from the motorcycles point of view: It is built for one purpose, to convert gasoline into rapid motion. somewhere inside something is not right, after multiple trips to the doctor, it is still not better. the bike hurts, you as it's master are solely responsible for the bikes well being. find a different doctor for your bike. if you have not already, acquire a service manual, you may have to look for an auto electric repair shop (look in the yellow pages) the problem(s) you have are not terminal, they just have not been identified yet. good luck. dean
