I finally got my bike repainted was happy to be riding it again, was in Utah working for a month tore it down two weeks before I left back together a week after I got back, so I am screwing around and light the back tire up, my daughter who is 5 covers her ears, my son 1.5, is jumping up and down-he can run, trying to clap. When I get done there is a crowd (4-5)of 14 yr. olds standing around stradling thier BMX bikes jaws dropped, these things must really be attractive to the kids! possibly the reason that many tell me I need to grow up. Wife just walks into the house and slams the door,he, he, he.

Timbo - "That thing is sick." "Is that some kind of concept bike?"

Did that kid say "sick" or "slick"? I'm not trying to be picky but I think I smell a typo here.

Jack,
"Sick" no typo, is today, what would have been "bitchin" in my day.

In other words, if a young dude walks up to your bike and says "that's sick!", say thank you, it's a compliment.

These bikes are "romantic". They really are more about "how you feel".

I am sure all of this, when they were being designed, happened by mistake, but it happened.

When I was a kid, maybe 14 years old,[well, maybe 16...and maybe I wasn't driving] I was driving by the beachfront in my Jersey town and I saw an older kid, a lifeguard, sitting on his brand new Sportster, probably 1970. I had never seen a Sportster [not that I was aware of] but this bike was riveting, compelling to look at. When he pulled away from the curb, I knew by the sound that it was a Harley.
Much later in life, I was driving down HWY 36 in NJ and a chopper rider passed me on the right [pissed cause I was hogging the left lane?] and as he passed me, he looked back at me. The sound and the sight of the thing grabbed me. I had gotten closer to Harleys by then, as a doorman in a local club, I got to see a lot of them.
I was sleeping late one day, home from college for the summer. I heard "the sound", it seemed to be coming up my driveway...and it parked right under my window. I jumped up to find my friend Billy, sitting there rapping a new Sportster [he bought it with his bonus money, a late round draft pick] I ran out of the house and crawled all over the bike...FEVER had set in!

The fact that they work so well makes them even more desirable...I am actually thinking about "collecting" another M2. My only concern is that by taking another, I would be denying someone else the priviledge of ownership.

Silas:
The other side of that collecting thing is that you might be preventing a butchery of an M2 by some "Bike Builder" wanna-be, and that would be a good thing.

HRS said
"We had a fellow ask us if the S3T was a Ducatti? "
My X1 gets comments, "oh thats soo pretty, What kind of bike is it?"
the best one yet,

On looker: "What kind of bike is that?"
oldog: "It's a Buell"
On looker: "Is that German?"
oldog: "No sir, It's American"
On looker: "Who builds it?
oldog: "Buell, you know part of HD"
At this point, On looker gets this confused glazed look in his eyes. Analogs of this conversation have happened on several ocasions,
It's always good for a smile, Buell a state secret? <GRIN>

Oldog, you are making good sense...anyone who would stoop to harming one of these MaDeuces [or any TUBER] to make a "chopper" should be strung up! They are already CHOPPERS! How do you improve on perfection?

It is probably our duty to rescue as many of these critters as possible to preserve them for posterity

Despite the technical superiority, the newer line of Buells have lost some of the charm as well as the tough streetfighter look.

A monday morning rant ...
My bike Aint no chopper.......

Its sad that many of these buells are being chopped up by the Wanna bees, to each his own.

As I see it each X1 that is destroyed by accident of through the building of yet another
lowwidesoftfattailboy-baddaz-wannabe-chopper my bike gets more valuable, and exclusive....

In highschool you could not have given me a harley, the one time that I went to the local dealer I was shocked to see catch pans under the new bikes. ( the memory is quite vivid )
I still don't go for chrome and leather fringes. OR for the posers life style.

I still have my complaints, like the oil pump gear that I am getting ready to change, should not have to do that on a 20 year old design (asuming that the evo was engineered in '84)

I never had to put that kind of effort into My zook. ( it was not trouble free though )

On the other hand, My world has changed, at 23 the "specs" meant every thing, at 45( when I purchased the lightning ) I was interested in handling, technical merit, and uniqueness. Except for top speed and hp many considerations that I applied then were still weighed in that desicion along with one other

MADE IN USA.

If I had to choose between a brand new clone of my 79 zook and my X1,
The X1 wins hands down it does what the ujm was supposed to in smiles per gallon.

The "old" tuber still gets looks going down the road, there are only 2 buells here in town,
( the other is an XB )

Silas Ol' buddy If I had a garage, and things were a little more settled for me there would be one of each flavor of tuber parked in it, with a lightning long,

The only time that I realy get into a crusier or chopper is when some one takes a basket case and
builds a one off from parts, Parting out rideable bikes for choppers is wasteful and destructive.

On second thought in that I have altered my X1 to my tastes I guess its a chopper of sorts LOL
best of all it's just about the way I want it.

I had a guy on Friday say my bike was Swiss. I said it was a HD company and he says that they are made in Switzerland and I say no...Wisconsin. He says "when did they move to the US?" I told him about Erik, HD etc. Someone at an auto parts store a few weeks back insisted that a Buell was German or at least they used to be German...Den

I've never heard Swiss or German before but Italian, oh yeah!
My guess is people perceive anything big, slow and chromed as American; anything exotic and sleek is Italian. Fast and plastic as Japanese.
Perhaps it's no wonder Buell hasn't received its full recognition, the typical viewer doesn't know how to pigeon hole it!

I think the XB line still looks tough, but not ageless like the tube frame. The tube frame bikes will forever remind me of the muscle cars of the late sixties.

That's how I feel about Sportsters. Every time I see a stripped down battle scarred Sporty it stirs me soul. Ah, maybe I'm maturing beyond my scant years

i pull into a gas/convience store one night and a guy walking out shouts to his buddy gassing the car "check out that harley!". when i get my helmet off he says "that's a harley, right?" i say, "no, it's a buell." he says, "i have a friend that has one, it's a harley!". i look at him and say in a very direct tone, "no, it's a buell" dude just stands there staring at me as i walk into the store. you can only do so much to educate the 'experts' among us.

later...philip

I was at a home depot getting ready to leave.
A man and his son were looking my bike over and daddy asked:
"what kind of bike is that?"
I pointed to the tank.
"who makes it?"
I pointed to the tank again.

I like to soften the blow of ignorance a little and help clue people in as to where to go to get one for themselves. I tell them "It's a Buell, the company makes Harleys too. Buells are the ones that go faster, handle better, and stop best."

Guys that know bikes s little might call you on Buell making Harleys but with a little more talk it ends up with them knowing more about Buells and that is a good thing.
