For those of you who have crashed with swingarm sliders and/or front axle sliders, did you also have your rear passenger foot peg carriers installed/in-place, and did the passenger foot pegs help to prevent damage? I plan to take a Track Day and was wondering if I should put my passenger foot pegs back on the bike for the track day? |

I've not dropped the bike with my axle sliders installed, but I have with the rear pegs on. In that situation, they most definitely saved me some body scratches. |

PUT THEM ON I've got the DarkHorse sliders on and the rear pegs still helped save the bodywork - you can clearly see the pegs got a little bit of wear. For anybody else who hasn't yet, get the axle sliders!!! I recommend getting them in black. If you go down you can just hit them with a can of paint and they're as good as new! |

While the rear pegs might help save bodywork, they may cause you significant bodily injury. I know more than one club racer who has been impaled by his footpegs. The fewer protuberances on your bike the better. Bodywork is cheap compared to the use of your leg. Remove the kickstand too, or at least tie wrap it up. |

Blake, Great point, I've left mine on for crash protection, they are coming off now. I imagine that they could also keep you from getting away from the bike while sliding if you got hooked by the protruding brackets. |

If you have a spare pair of passenger pegs at hand, cut them down flush with the mounting so that what Blake mentioned won't happen. Its so easy to swap back and forth that for a trackday, its worth the extra 5 mins of prep, and the dorky looks. I bet if you asked Darkhorse Moto nicely, he could possibly be persuaded into making a set of passenger peg sliders to replace the actual passenger pegs without taking off the brackets... |

When my neighbor went down on his xb9s, the entire passenger peg assembly ripped right off the bike. So great idea, but what good is it if won't stay on? |

I've seen two Firebolts low sided with the passenger pegs on. In both cases the passenger pegs prevented damage to the bodywork, but both bikes suffered some nice road rash on the swingarm. I would definitely recommend swingarm sliders. Blake brings up a very good point. I wonder about the crash worthiness of the passenger peg brackets with the passenger pegs removed. |

I am going to go with swingarm sliders, front axle sliders, Buell frame pucks, and no passenger foot pegs or mounting. It is a track day at Blackhawk Farms, South Beloit, IL, 9/10/2005. Thank you all for all the great input! Mike |

That set-up will be fine Mikep. I have been down on my pucks and swingarm sliders and they have done just what they were supposed to. I did however get a little nick on the bottom of the front fork that could have been avoided with axle sliders. Ditch the passenger pegs...they only slow you down!

roly, yeah, looks like someone permanently removed the passenger peg mount/frame hinge assembly and bolted on lsl sliders - probably better to leave the stock frame hinge intact. |

hi johnb ,could possible to attach puck under neath of footrest ,so sticks out of side with footrest in up position,would save rear bodywork under seat. could use a hook though foot rest and a nut holding puck on ,skate board wheel etc. could do the whole show with bubble wrap. 20 layers that is all around bike. not that i am paranoid about dropping the thing. maybe get some bubble wrap for self to , now thats a thing eh ? |

roly, i like yer mount-slider-under-peg idea; but, i'd heed blake's observation re protuberances/impaling - peg could swing down or get hooked due to crash forces. peg needs to be securely locked & stay locked somehow in the up position.

Can't anyone see/recognise that using the passenger peg arms as a crash bobbin puts the upper portion of the swingarm at risk [when you do go down and the armitage gets pushed into the path of the swingarm]? It's a passenger peg. A convenience item. That's all it is and [am sure] was designed to be. |

I think, on followup, that you'd be better off, if you insist on placing bobbins back there, to make a [strong] short bracket to replace the passenger peg arms, to specifically mount some bobbins off of. It would even look pretty trick. I don't know or suggest that the mounting screws/subframe are beefy enough to escape just as much damage as you might save to the otherwise user replaceable tail section plastic... |

Previous idea illustrated. Brackets - Red Bobbins - Blue The top black line is the wheel well. The second black link is an additional bracket to help strengthen things by sharing the lateral load of a hit across both mounting points (the two screw points on each, four total). Dunno if there is enough clearance above the wheel for something like that - IT WOULD NEED TO BE CHECKED BEFOREHAND! |

I like the bracket design, anybody here gonna make a prototype? I'd like to try one out (no not really try it out just install on bike) How about a bracket design for the front, any ideas? I like the plastic protectors, there is good selection of them as well as colors. keep the idea going. |

Just do what I did when I low sided at the Gap. Although the swing arm and forks sliders did an outstanding job, just stay on the bike in the riding position (ask Ugriz, he was behind me), and your leathers and knee puck will take all the abuse!! Not to mention your helmet and armor gloves! |

I will let you guys figure out how much more damage the bike would have taken without the passenger pegs on it...the scratches on the swingarm are from when it hit the gravel on the side of the roadway... |

its late, just finished watching the eagles lose to the falcons w/my brooklyn buddies but we beat our dart league rivals 2nite (who cares, anyway..), this sliders/crashes topic started by mikep has been addressed sufficiently in my mind with suggested currently available solutions such as front/rear axle sliders, frame pucks and warnings about kickstand and passenger pegs for track days. wycked's photo's confirm the value of the frame pucks & is proof not to got without (very happy to see you're truly ok and riding again). pro/con/innovation re passenger peg area are interesting - i'm leaning toward adding sliders mounted high up on the ventura rack or bolted under the wheelwell to keep road rash off upper bodywork (and me) in a slide. actually more concerned w/protecting shift/brake pedals - maybe some robust fixed peg rearsets/sliders there. wondering if buell has had success lately lobbying insurance companies not to worry about frame damage and not to base fees on engine displacement or race-replica stereotyping. a few old illconduct pics for fun cheers. |
