Has anyone had any problems with their voltage regulator crapping out on them? I ride a brand new, 2006 XB12Ss and it only has about 225 miles on it. here's the story...was riding last nite when bike starting loosing power, sputtering, and headlights dimming until finally shut down. had to get a jump and then push start it and eventually made it home. Put the voltmeter across the terminals and it was dropping little by little. Think may be the voltage regulator. does this sound right? what possibly could have caused it. |

What you are describing sounds more like a stator. Based on the age of the bike, I would look more at loose connectors then blown parts. Check and make sure all connections to the battery are clean and tight. I don't have the service manual here at work, but I would also find the plug between the stator and the voltage regulator (it was tucked under the cam cover on my M2, probably in the same place on the XB's) and make sure that is clean and connected as well. If you pull that plug and fire up the bike, you should be able to slap an AC Volt multi meter on it and see the voltage going up with revs between any two pins. I believe it starts with like 30 volts at idle, and goes up like 8 volts with every 1000 RPM increase in engine speed. The service manual gives pretty food detail. Also, with the bike off, you should be able to measure the resistance between each pair of the pins (three combinations). It should probably be like .6 ohms. If it is infinity, you have a broken wire in the stator assembly somewhere. Also measure resistance between each pin and ground, if any read anything but infinity, then you have a wire shorted to ground somewhere in the stator. If it is shorted to ground, I would (if it were not under warranty) look inside the primary cover and see if the plate retaining the wires right as they come off the stator was installed incorrectly and has pinched and shorted the stator output. If you pop off a primary inspection cover, does it *really* stink? It could just be a bad stator from a supplier. Electrical stuff usually fails quickly or lasts a long life span. |

thanks 'reepicheep'. after some diagnosing i came up with voltage regulator being the faulty item. took to HD shop and they agreed. problem was fixed under warranty and i am picking up tonite. cant wait to start riding again!!! |

Oh the freakin' joy of charging issues. Now, at 5300 miles it seems that I'm in the lack o' charge club. Appears to be a stator issue as I can get at least 30 volts on the voltmeter at 2000 rpm on four of the six possible stator pin combo's but a max of 13 volts on the other two pin combo's. No funky smell is present in the primary though....and the battery and VR test out as okay. Not really looking forward to pulling the motor apart, but you do what you must. I think I'll go with an aftermarket stator, probably the Accel. Some questions: The stator is identical to the standard Sportster item, correct? So if I order a Sporty stator and it will work and plug in to the Buell? Coated or uncoated stator? Thanks for any help....... (Message edited by Rokoneer on September 06, 2005) |

I have not looked at an XB stator, but I thought it was 3 phase, which should be three pins, which is only three possible combinations. Since this is AC (not DC), it won't matter if you go from pin A-B or from B-A (at least unless you are looking at a oscillascope ). So if you have pins A : B : C, you have three measurements: A-B B-C C-A So if I am guessing right and your 6 values are the three above, plus the same three reversed, then it does indeed sound like you lost one of the three phases. No idea about the coated or uncoated. If the coated would fit, I would think it would be better, but that is pure speculation. The stator is likely the same, but I don't know if the wire going from it to the VR is the same. It is not a huge job once you get the big sockets and a primary locking bar rigged up. I have heard that a towel works in a pinch. Make sure you really clean up the shafts and use the right torque and lock-tight. Many have had the crank nut back off after doing this job, and it can be disasterous if you don't catch it quickly. |
