well, the other day I started off my 10k service by draining the engine and trans fluids. Was originally going to just do the basic stuff, but that's where the original intent failed and the over-doer in me took over. Since I had already purchased a spare belt, clutch cable and plug wires, I decided to install the new parts and keep my good parts as emergency spares. That might not seem all that unusual, but since timing is everything, and I just happened to receive a new (used) header from member "Dago" (Thanks!), and I happened to have a roll of header wrap that was sitting on my shelf while waiting to find a suitable XB12 header to install on, I went ahead and wrapped it, coated it with silicon spray which I baked on at 450* for 45 minutes, rotated the engine down and swapped the headers. Since the forks were off for the fork oil change, it was easier to get in and get the motor dropped. Being a holiday weekend, I need to wait until tomorrow to get a few final items. I hadn't planned on pulling the forks, so I didn't have the necessary fork oil, and my anti-seize is not specifically oxygen sensor safe, so I wasn't able to install the sensor. Anyway, when you step back and look at the state of the bike, it seems like a daunting task and you tend to wonder what you got yourself into, but I love this stuff! Here's a few pics: Stock vs wrapped header: A couple pics of a "super naked" bike:

Geeze, your garage looks like mine on a bad day. Only problem is we have 4 bikes in it. |

Those types of photos are priceless! Though not too uncommon. Putting Buell mechanics out of business since 1985~ Good deal! |

I'm glad they got there before the long weekend! Be sure to post some pics when you get everything back together. Enjoy! |

I'll tell ya -- those Pit Bull stands sure paid for themselves on this one Especially the front one One note -- in one of the photos, you'll see an impact gun on the floor. I don't like to use impact if not needed -- especially on the bike (where it's usually NOT needed), but I had one bolt -- one of the bolts holding the front motor mount -- that absolutely refused to give. It made my ratchet skip it's teeth. I have a 3/8" butterfly impact gun that couldn't even break it loose. I got out the 1/2" but couldn't find my 1/2 to 3/8 adapter (hmmm, is that the one adapter that I don's have?). That's why the front mount is still on the engine. However, not sure exactly why the manual instructs you to remove it anyway. Maybe it makes getting to the front exhaust port easier? The only surprise was how hard it was to get the new exhaust port seals in place. Thought I was going to have to go buy a new one for the rear. (Message edited by 2k4xb12 on September 06, 2005) |

Did you put a NEW front muffler strap on or did you reuse the old one? Asking because several that have broken that strap, broke used straps and not new ones. Bike looks sweet with that black wrap. |

Nah, I reused the front strap. Probably should have put a new one, but when I asked the dealer if they install new front straps and Torca clamps when they install the race kits, they said no -- they have never had a problem arise from the reuse of the old strap. I've had this one off and on at least a half dozen times. I think the failures might be a result of over-torquing. Would be cheap insurance though... Think I'll pick one up and swap it out anyway. Thanks for the reminder... Steve. |

Then that dealer is asking for lots of lawsuits...it states right in the directions for the race kit and the service manual to NOT reuse that clamp strap. Maybe its me being gunshy after what happened to me but I would get a new one on there asap. |
