I was out yesterday for what turned out to be a great, long ride with a bunch of other bikes; a bunch of Harleys and a few sportbikes. The weather was perfect and after all the rain we've had, the roads were cleaned of any and all sand and debris. The best part was roughly every five miles or so someone at a light would yell over to me, saying "nice bike"; other cars in traffic would speed-up/ slow down to point and give me the thumbs up. It was to the point that at the second time we stopped (first time for ice cream, second time for gas) the other guys were complaining that no gave a crap about their bikes |

Yep, a 98 s1 is an old bike all right. Just like my 99 x1 is a freaking antique. I just sold my 82 Honda cb 900 super sport. THAT was an old bike. 17,000 miles, still ran and looked great. sorry guys, i guess get a little tired of hearing about buells that are only 7 yrs old being old bikes and obsolete. They were cutting edge when they were new and the comments about how old they and still look new are proof to that. |

Not saying that my S2 IS old, but that people looking at it think it is newer. It is a compliment. Is my S2 old, not really, it is the newest vehicle I have ever owned. Is it obsolete? Hell no! I haven't heard anyone say that. |

I wasn't trying to say my '98 was old.... do the math, it's only seven years old. I mean, in a time when every moron I seem to come across feels compelled to trade in their bike every year for the "newest and greatest", having the same bike for any extended period of time says a lot. A lot about the bike itself and for the rider and his or her reason for owning and riding a bike to begin with. My fondest memory of my Saturday ride is the guy who walked up to me and after the standard questions (how big's the engine, how fast will it go etc.) asked how old it was. He nearly fell over when I told him it was a '98. He said that he didn't know anyone made such a bike "back than". I just laughed and told him if he really wants to see something, he should check out the new Buell line! |

My RS is finally getting broke in. 14 years of babying it is long enough. |

Visualize this: I'm a 63 year old man on a 2000 M2 Cyclone, I'm wearing a helmet, jacket, and gloves. Little of none of me is visible because I don't like the thought of scraping it off on a road somewhere. The M2 is blue, clean, and recently waxed. I stop at a crosswalk in Bar Harbor or Searsport and let 10-15 tourists exercise their rights of way. The M2 is idling at 1,050 RPM and inoffensively audible through the stock exhaust system. The M2 gets looks that range from curious to approving from a number of people as they cross, even an an occasional "nice ride" type comment, usually from a younger male. I personally receive approving looks from several attractive ladies. The crosswalk clears, I snick it into low, ease out the clutch, and head on up the road with severely enhanced self esteem and thoroughly enjoying the day. Life is good. Life is great when you own a Buell. Jack |

My wife just took the S3T out for a short ride. She said the same thing: "the Buell is a head turner, everybody looks at it." |

Tom b.... Never said it was obsolete... What I meant to say was what you said in you last sentence, "... the comments about how old they are and still look new are proof to that." On the other hand in this day and age, my 90 springer softail would be considered "old skool" by 70% of biker..., er motorcycle enthusiasts.... |

Jack, now I know you're lying. Nobody "snicks" an M2 into ANY gear! |

I get more looks at my bike when I park my m2, than the $45,000-50,000 choppers that are in the same row....must get their dander up when that happens.....REX |

Didn't mean to sound negative. I just hear about the "old tubers" and how obsolete they are, maybe not on this post in particular, but in the past. Just went to a meet on sunday and parked next to another x1 and an m2, they got some attention. |

Captainkirk - Mine is pretty snickable if you wait about 3 seconds after pulling the clutch in. But the shift into 2nd? That sounds like dropping a chunk of lead into a galvanized bucket. :> I've been messing with the adjustments on the primary chain, clutch lever and actuator, and drive belt all summer and have finally got it all working pretty good. That means something else is about to go wrong, right? Jack |

Lately I've rode with a couple other guys. One rides a Honda Hawk 650...my S1 looks high tech compared to that. Another guy rides an XB12R...my bike looks ancient compared to that! |

I always thought that the modern XB is what the Honda Hawk would have become if Honda had more vision.... The superhawk became just another UJM sportbike, I always thought the original hawk was something special. |

just did a MDA parade this past sunday, definitely had more gawkers looking at the buell than any of the choppers&hogs. had people pointing and smiling, the kids loved it! you could see the refreshed look in the crowds eyes after watching a thousand harleys go by when i rode through on the m2! |

This will sound like total BS but I had a girl in a Mustang actually take a picture of me and my bike at a stop light with her camera phone. Flattering indeed....but maybe it was just the bike? |

Sometimes I have little girlies in the mall check out my streetfighter machine. Adults seem less impressed...lol. The Hawk and the CB-1 are my favorite Honda streetbikes. I think they're both timeless. |

Jack; Actually, I've heard the Baker shift drum actually makes the Buell somewhat...well, "snickable", for want of a better word. Too rich for my blood, tho. I found the upgraded Buell shifter helped scads and it gets easier with each added mile on the odometer!!! Was a PITA for the first 1K tho. |

Was a PITA for the first 1K tho. Broke acouple shiftarms myself trying to stomp it into gear! The newer assembly makes the whole ordeal much easier |

I think that the tube framed Buell's have somehow captured a look that says "VINCENT, NORTON, XLCH", all the dreambikes of my youth. My M2 has that funky "star wars" quality, ancient technology, cutting edge at it's inception that is still deadly accurate. ...like the Millenium Falcon...Many centuries from now Harrison Ford will no doubt chose one [the bike was put away by a dying Jedi Knight and has laid dormant, brooding, waiting for the right person] to help rid the galaxy of pesky squids on extended swingarm Ninja's... I am equally happy looking at the thing as I am riding it. It is definetly "daydream" inspiring. Owning it has had a positive effect on my personality!!! wow, I am really getting weird (Message edited by silas_clone on September 09, 2005) |

I think the reason everyone says "old bike" when talking about a tube frame Is, The freakin dealers treat you like it's an old bike. My local HD/Buell dealer are even reluctant to work on it. It really pisses me off because not only does my 99 X1 look better than the new XB's, 5 or 6 years old is NOT OLD. |

I agree with biggs, my 99X1 with the blue and white stripe has that baaaaddd to the bone look. I like it much better than the newer techie lookin Buells. I had a couple bus loads of 14 year old boys in the lane next to me checking me out drooling on the windows this morning at a stop light. I pretended to be too cool to notice and launched it off the line. I started kind of slow, rolled it to about 3,000rpm and pegged the throttle, hit second about 2 seconds later and left em about 1/2 mile behind. It must have been quite a sight as it was quite a ride. They'll be arguing all day long about what kind of bike that was..Den |

I was called a liar tonight when I told someone that not only was my buell a 96, but that Buells went "all" the way back to 83. (Think it was 83). |

Rode my '98 S1W to welding school on Wed. night. Parked it off to the side of the building by the fence, out of the way. Few of the younger guys went over and were looking at it. One guy, about 19 years old says, "That thing is sick." "Is that some kind of concept bike?" I kind of laughed and said "no, actually it's a 1998 Buell, production motorcycle". He says, "no way! That thing looks like it's out of the future". He then goes on to tell me he's heard of Buell, that they make cool snowboard equipment. I tried to tell him that I didn't think it was the same company, but he insists it must be, then says "wow, I didn't know they started making bikes". I left it at that and went into class. Kids nowadays...SHEESH!!! |
