My 04 XB12R manual says .035 on the plug gap. |

The reason it's missing and popping is it's too lean. You freed up the breathing a little with the intake & exhaust mods, now you need a race ECM to help normalize the mixture. Don't be paranoid, be stoichiometric! |

.035 gap is correct. how did the plug wires look? that is NOT normal behaviour for that engine. the stock ECM will work just fine with your stock engine. a K&N filter and drummer can is WELL within the the range of the stock ECM. you may need to have the TPS zero reset, or possibly have a bad temp sensor or a loose injector lead. and dont worry too much about that "choke"..... there aint one. |

Yes, the ECM (stock) is certainly capable of delivering the required amount of fuel to a Drummer equipped bike... BUT... It will only be correct at the same point in the RPM range where you settled the AFV. The rest of the curve will be off a little. A little rich lower than where you settled the AFV and a little lean above that. The only proper solution at this point is a PCIII. The TFI will only add fuel, and many pipes need fuel removed on the lower end. It's also nice to be able to remove about 15-20% fuel at 0% throttle above 1500RPM. This clears up the popping on decel very nicely. |

On my 05 12S I'm currently running the Drummer, Race ECM, TFI, K&N, stock inner airbox and no snorkel. Plugs are NGK standard 9 series with a .035 gap..... holy crap is my bike a different machine. No 'missing' during warm-up as you mention. Not much help, I realize, but FYI on an almost similar setup. By the way, I still have mild popping on decel with the Race ECM in but i'm hoping to tune that away with the TFI, its very mild and sounds kinda cool. Few more test runs and it should vanish. I almost went the PCIII route (loved it on my last bike) but very happy with this setup. She's almost dialed and pulls like crazy. |

This is probably a stupid question but what is a tfi, and do I need one? Here is the deal I just ordered a latus pipe, race ecm, K&N filter for my xb12s. |

A TFI is a device that gives the ability to tune "like" a carburetor, but a carburetor with an open loop mode. The company that made the TFI IMO didn't employ good testing procedures and the device "works" but the company that sells it doesn't quite understand how it works with the XB. Either that or they know how it works, but they're un-willing to go into the details with their customers for fear of confusing them. The TFI is a picky little box, but it CAN be used correctly. The key is to settle the AFV after initial installation with the first three pots at "off". Once that's done, you can adjust the first three pots. If you adjust the fourth pot after the initial "settling" then you need to re-settle the AFV. The further from 7:00 you get with the fourth pot, the greater the likely-hood of causing your AFV to creep to one end of it's scale and that will throw an engine code. With that combo... You shouldn't "need" one, but a TFI or a PCIII wil certainly give you more power. There are quirks with the PCIII as well... |
