Hi everyone-I noticed a little oil mist around where the oil lines connect to the swingarm on my XB9.I checked to see if they were tight, and they seemed fine,so I wiped them down good, and made a mental note to check them the next time I was cleaning the bike.Tonight I find the same oil mist(it is quite light, not even a drip, just a mist that catches dirt so you can see it)I got under there with my trusty mini-mag light, and it appears that the oil is coming from the bearing that the swingarm pivot shaft passes through(on the left side of the bike)My question is this-is the oil tank separated from the swingarm bearings?I would think that it was,but where is this oil coming from?Have any of you guys replaced your swingarm bearings?,and if you have do they also seal engine oil in? Thank you in advance......

Swingarm pivot bearings are separate from the oil tank. Definitely.

Don't know why you'd have oil at the pivots - unless by coincidence it just ends up there coming from somewhere else.

Doesn't take hardly any oil to turn into a dirt magnet though!

as with the motor cases ...

you could have a porus swingarm

it is cast .... there WILL be some seepage

casting leaves pours , and or little holes
that can and (over time) WILL have some kind of oil residue

on the harleys silver motor that is acceptable

but if you have drips of oil i would look at it more closely

just my 2c

Hey everybody-I rode the mighty XB yesterday a little over 100miles.I just took a good look and I can't find any trace of oil.I know I did'nt imagine that oil stain the other day,but there is nothing there now.I'm a bit of a nut about oil leaks,so I'll keep watching, and report back for advice.Thank you for your replies so far!Later......

Have you "topped up" your oil lately? Maybe spill just a small amount down the backside/motorside of the swingarm and not quite get it all cleaned off, only to have it drip down and mist along the lines...

Wyckedflesh-Maybe I could've done that ,but I don't think so(I'm regularly made fun of for keeping my bikes so clean)At this point,I feel a little foolish,'cause I saw that oil on there(I wiped it off!)I literally just walked over to the bike and checked again, and it is as dry as a popcorn fart. Now I won't be able to ride the bike again 'till this weekend, but I'll be checkin'!

"I'm a bit of a nut about oil leaks..."

Buells will make you that way.

My M2 does not have any oil leaks. Anywhere. The other day I warmed it up for about 5-6 minutes at a steady 1,500-2,000 RPM. I shut if off, checked the oil, and it was down almost 1/2" below the dip stick. It was so low that I could see the curve on the back side of the tank. I almost added added some oil but fought off the urge because I simply could not imagine where the oil could have gone.

I rode it about 3 miles, got gas, and rode it back home. And the oil was back up with about 1/8" or so on the dip stick. Right where I would expect it to be.

So now I'm thinking I'm never going to believe anything I see on the dip stick unless I have ridden the bike 5 miles or so first. It looks like it takes a few minutes or more at mid RPM or so to scavenge all the drain down oil out of the crankcase.

I have read every over filled oil tank story in the KV and I really don't want the add one of my own to the collection.

Jack

That volume increase is not the delay in returning case oil to the tank.
It's a combination of thermal expansion and aeration.
